Sodium, which is present in Common salt, is a great water retainer. Either cut down on salt intake or take salt substitutes instead (like Pottasium based edible salt) which should be available in normal grocery stores.

Water retention happens when our body needs more water but is not getting it (your body's way of telling you) - so actually you should drink more water to flush out excesss salt. Alcohol also causes dehydration and subsequently water retention.

Water retention is not caused by drinking too much water. It's caused by eating too much salt. Stay away from potato chips, pretzels, pre-packaged goods like Macaroni and cheese, canned goods like tuna or veggies. Eat more fresh fruit and veggies. Most people eat 3 times the amount of salt they need.

First of all, why are you avoiding water rentention? Do you have a health problem which is complicated by water rentention?

Keeping yourself hydrated is very important, therefore avoiding water is not the best option.
If you prefer a natural way, you could minimize intake of dietary sodium. Sodium is present in our everyday salt, and a major content in most proccessed foods, microwavable dinners, and canned goods. Also, increased dietary fiber also regulates the body's water better. Green leafy vegetables, bananas, and oranges are good sources of fiber.
If you want to take medcines, there are diuretic pills available upon doctor's prescription. Fiber supplements are also available in major suppermarkets.

Pretty much like everyone else has said avoid excess sodium & make sure to stay hydrated by drinking LOTS of fresh water!!! also if your liek me & still tend to retain water from time to tiem as this is commom w diabetics ask your Dr about a diuretic, I take Lasix and it works great but you have to BE SURE to supplement your potassium when using ANY type of diuretic Rx or OTC, as it will deplete youe potassium & can causes many problmes among these terrible leg cramps!! best of luck!

Drinking as much water as possible, it actually helps with water retention by flushing out your system, and whatever could be in it thats causing water retention (such as excessive sodium).

Avoid salt and DRINK LOTS OF WATER. I drink at least 6-9 eight oz. glasses a day. When I was pregnant I drank 12 and even then I did NOT retain water.

If you avoid water your body will hold onto it because it feels you are starving it of what it needs to function.

Reduce your salt intake, increase your potassium rich foods, like canteloupe, squash, kiwi, strawberries, sweet potatos. Drink lots of water, helps the kidneys in filtering and getting rid of excess fluid.
