Cardiology is the study of the heart but there is a difference between cardiologist and cardiac surgeon, cardiologist only prescribes medicines to heart patients while cardiac surgeon performs the surgery.

Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons work very closely together but they are not the same specialty.
Cardiologists are very good at managing patients who have coronary artery disease and other cardiac problems not requiring surgical correction.
Cardiac surgeons can perform bypass surgeries, correction of congenital defects and heart transplants. After the surgery, they usually both will manage the patient until they get out of hospital, then the care reverts back to the cardiologist.
