my sister claims to be vegetarian and some of her friends as well as mine and random people i've seen who also claim that but still eat fish. Last i checked fish are animals so why do vegetarians, or at least most of them, eat fish?

Technically, your sister is a pescatarian.

Pescatarians abstain from eating all meat *except* fish.

EDIT (just adding some stuff): Different people become vegetarians for different reasons. For some, there are health reasons. Others feel bad about eating certain animals. I'm going to assume that your sister feels bad about eating, say, cows and chickens, but not so bad about eating fish. Or maybe she just likes the way fish tastes too much to give it up.

Because they want some sort of an excuse to eat meat. They are not true vegetarians. Fish are like any other animal, they feel pain when they die. If you are going to be a vegetarian for the sake of animals lives then do it all the way.

Some people, me included, eat a primarily vegetarian diet for health and environmental conservation reasons. A wide variety of fruits and vegetables provide the body with fuel for cell building and living. Although a totally vegetarian diet could provide all of the proper nutrients, adding some extra protein in the form of fish is very healthy. It provides the body with omega3 fatty acids which are great for the heart and can help lower blood pressure.

Most of them do not eat fish. A vegetarian doesn't eat any animals. If she eat's fish, then she's not a vegetarian. Fish have central nervous systems and they understand pain. That's why it is a crime to me to put a hook in their mouth and make them be suspended by that hook. If it's not painful, then everybody would be doing it. All fisherman should put a hood through their cheeks and then hang from it and tell me that it doesn't hurt them.

There are certain nutrients you cannot get through a strictly vegetarian diet and which are essential to health. Vit. B12 and folic acid are a couple of them. These can be gotten from animan protein. The fats in fish are good for your heart, where the fats in other animal protein is bad for your heart, and also just animal protein (except fish) can cause cancer.

That is incorrect:

You can still be a vegetarian if you eat Fish, Poultry, Eggs or Dairy.

You just cannot be a VEGAN.

Many vegetarians have incorporated these things into their diet, because vegetables alone will not give you the essential vitamins and minerals needed to survive properly.

Vegetarians do not eat meat, poultry or fish. They can eat eggs or dairy. Vegans do not eat any form of animals including by-products, such as dairy. For some vegans this also includes bee products.
