They were originally made by the Native Americans. They also invented barbecue. Corn was a staple of their diet. It's in most history books.

The tortillas have their origin in the place where Mexico stands nowadays, and before the conquest of Mexico, the corn was and still is the base of the mexican food and a symbol of mexican history and identity...and in that time they were using the corn for drinks and meals...including the tortillas.
In the north of Mexico is common to find anywhere the tortillas made of wheat flour, those are huge and delicious too...and in other areas of the country you can find them but less, cos the people is not used to them there.

Check out the sites below. Tortillas as we Americans know it as a wheat flour tortilla and it is a staple in Tex-Mex cuisine. But a traditional tortilla is made of corn.

They are made from both. Corn tortillas have less calories. One flour tortilla equals six slices of white bread.

well, some are made from corn and some from wheat. You can pretty much take your pick when you're at the super market.
