Do you mean "arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis"?
The following lifestyle changes can help prevent atherosclerosis:
Eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol, and low-salt diet
Eat a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet. This kind of diet includes cottage cheese, fat-free milk, fish (not canned in oil), vegetables, poultry, egg whites, and polyunsaturated oils and margarines (corn, safflower, canola, and soybean oils). Avoid foods with excess fat in them such as meat (especially liver and fatty meat), egg yolks, whole milk, cream, butter, shortening, lard, pastries, cakes, cookies, gravy, peanut butter, chocolate, olives, potato chips, coconut, cheese (other than cottage cheese), coconut oil, palm oil, and fried foods.
Exercise regularly.
Lose weight if you are overweight.
Stop smoking.
Please see the webpages for more details on Arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is caused by a build of plaque on the arteries.
Plaque builds up on the arteries for two reasons:
One is bad cholesterol. The liver makes bad cholesterol and it builds up on the arteries as it travels through the blood stream. This typically only happens though if our diet is poor and/or we are overweight or obese.
The other is Platelets, they are produced in bone marrow which is in our bones. Platelets are blood fragments that make blood thicker and helping with cloting ... they are a good thing but they sometimes tend to stick to arteries as they travel through the blood stream.
The solution medicaly:
Medication & Surgery
Sometimes there are medications that can be perscribed which help but in most all cases their just a band aid.
Asprin is a comonly perscribed medication as it prevents those Platelets from sticking to the arteries. There are other medications like statins that are perscribed as well, they prevent the liver from producing cholesterol.
Surgery is typically a more invasive approach and is typicaly what needs to be done to fix arteries that are hardened. In some cases a stent can be put in place to widen the artery that has hardened to allow an increase in blood flow. However, If that can't be done because there is a build up of way to much plaque or the arteries have gone necrotic then a vein needs to be taken from the leg and grafted on to bypass a part of the artery.
Prevention:
The best way to prevent from having to go through all this or expierence any of this is to exercise. Cardio helps keep them arteries clean .. it lowers bp and heart rate, and helps blood flow through your body more efficiently.
Do some stair steping, bike riding, runing, walking, swiming, etc.. it all excellent forms of cardio.

it is built up plaque on the walls of the arteries which causes narrowing which causes heart attacks and strokes ect. you may need to have your dr. give you a plaque busting drug , my mother in law eats oatmeal, but a good omega 3,and fish oils work at helping too.
