It's the woman who lives there seems like half crazy.
When I told her to not to open the door because the smell of smoke gets into my suite, she said it's not the smell of smoking whereas obvious it is. And she said she would close the door right away with the smile on her face. But then 30 min. later I could smell cigarette again in my apt. and when I went out to check, she let the door open again chain-smoking in her apt. This is not the person who should deal with talk or negotiation. This is why even if I filed a complaint to the apt. manager, she could get away from downright lying. How can I counteract? What should I do? What's the most effective method of dealing with this kind of psycho?

I've used air refreshner, blocking the gap on the door and it still comes in. My smoke allergy makes me too sick. The only thing that the person have to do is open the window and close the door. But she is moron. The corridor gets foggy due to the smoking. It's impossible for the smell to not to get into my bachlor apt.. I can't move, I can't afford any moving cost at this moment. It's not allowed to smoke in the corridor in my building. But is it allowed to smoke with the door open? It's the same effect. This person lives in bachlor too and with the door wide open, it's the corridor that's smell worse than her own apt. I want really good idea of dealing with this moronic toxic waste who happened to be born as a human.

My only answer to dan t.----Why don't you keep smoking and die from the most severe form of cancer and stop bothering other people's health? People like you are walking toxic. If you are ignorant about smoking allergy, google it. It causes severe headache, and throat pain which is unbearable when you're exposed to the secondhand smoke daily. Allergy doesn't have to kill you right away. Did you even graduate from elementary school?

answer to GiGi--- you try to make sense out of that smoker's crazy behaviour? I don't cook at my apt. most of time. I wish I could cook something really smelly to counteract if that woman has a functional nose. And lots of cooking smell coming from other residents, they don't bother me.
Food smell isn't toxic like smoking!!!!!
Also no one in this corridor cook with their door open! No smokers in this corridor smoke with their door open. If she can't bear her own smoke smell, why does she even smoke in the first place? What's the point of smoking with the door open?
That's why she is moron.

I forgot to mention. This woman has a fan over her stove. She doesn't turn it on and open the door instead. Half-crazy. This is not a sane person to deal with. The best answer so far is from midwestbruin-Showing her I'm crazier than her. I need little oiling on that great idea... hmmm..

Ok, here is your solution to this ladies noxious fumes. Go to the nearest place that rents construction tools, and rent a contractors fan. They are used during construction quite often to remove drywall dust from buildings. Place it about 3 feet inside of your doorway pointed in the direction of her door. If you open your window it will pull fresh air from your window through your apartment and push it in the direction of hers. These fans move a large volume of air, and she would most likely be forced to close her door when her pictures start flopping on the wall. I would think that she would learn real quickly to close her door and open her window when smoking. I would not see your actions in doing this as being anymore offensive that her smoking.

I sincerely sympathize. Unfortunately, if there is nothing in your rental agreement about forbidding smoking, there may be nothing legally you can do about it.

You might try putting a fan at the bottom of your door and face the blades so that air from your flat is being directed away from your door.

Something else that is rather devious....there are sprays that you can buy that are meant to spray on garbage to keep animals away. The smell is atrocious (we've used them to spray on garbage bags that we put out at night because the trash collectors arrive at 0530). When she isn't looking, you could spray this all around her door and even underneath her door. If she complains about the smell, simply tell her "All I can smell is cigarette smoke" very sweetly and innocently.

In the future, I'd seriously look for a flat that has a non-smoking policy.

Depending on where you live states are cracking down on smoking!
I too have smoke allergies you are very right, residual smoke on clothes can get to me.
Many states are requiring landlords to designate a certain percentage of their properties as smoke free.
As a landlord my self this is great, cleaning an apartment after a smoker has lived there is costly, often requiring the replacement of carpet and sealing the walls and ceilings with kilz.
a large percentage of fires are caused by smokers.
Check out smokefree.net and research your states laws, you may be able to have your landlord move you to a smoke free unit.
Smoke free units cannot share common areas with smoked units.
I don't mind if people smoke just don't exhale!

Make life unbearable for her until she moves or understands that you are crazier than her. The only way to get a desired result from people who are irrational is for them to fear you.

Put a porno sound track on loud in your room on loop before you go to work. Make really strange noises that you know she can hear then if she asks you about it act all confused like you don't know what she is referring to. Ask her really odd questions like how bad blood stains various fabrics and then a few days later how to remove it from a mattress, etc.

Is smoking allowed?

If it IS allowed, you don't have many choices. If you were there first, you can try to lodge a complaint. If she was, moving may be your best bet.

If NOT, the smell should be all the proof the super needs to take action.

i would suggest you seal the edges of YOUR door and get an air cleaner. or of course you could move. sorry but you can't make her keep her door closed anymore than she can make you keep your door open.

your saying, she shouldn't be allowed to open her door? you can't tell anyone that has there own app. that they can't open their door. When you smell smoke open the door and spray some freshner out there.
