You're visiting someone's home or business and they give you a cup of coffee and a plate of biscuits. Being a man, I simply eat all of them. Someone told me that this is rude. If it is rude, how many should I leave?

For Americans: cookies are called biscuits in the UK.

This seems to be relevant to some people, so I'll just confirm: I'm not overweight. I'm one of those people who can eat whatever they like without gaining any weight. I can, so I do, I suppose.

It is not rude. If they give them to you, they expect you to eat as many as you want. However, if a plate of biscuits is set at the table for a group to share, you should only take as many as there are for everyone else at the table. If there is a table of 3 with 6 biscuits on the plate, it is rude to take more than two. Also, one should never take the last one if there had been seven.

If you're in someone's home, and you're the only guest, they probably want you to eat as many cookies as you'd like. Maybe you could say something like, "Oh, these are so good. I have to stop myself from eating more." Then they may say, "Feel free to eat them. I put them out for you." It probably isn't all that horrible, though, if you don't say anything and just eat them all. Maybe you could leave one or two. Maybe they'll say, "Finish the biscuits, so I can get rid of the plate."

If you're in the home of a parent, grandparent, sibling, or older aunt just eat all the cookies. That's why anyone in any of these categories put them out.

In a business situation, I'd eat two or maybe three (if there were a plate-load) and wait to see if the person said, "Have more?"

A gift given graciously and accepted graciously will bless both the giver and the receiver. I would try and finish as many of the biscuits as I can then take the rest in a bag or receptacle acquired for this purpose.

Look at it this way, if they gave you a plate with biscuits on then they are for you and if you don't eat them all you might offend them, so next time someone does that, eat them just in case it offends them if you leave any.

It s not how much you leave its how many you take if you want to look a greedy fat pig eat the lot. If your considerate you eat only one or two enough left for everyone else or a later cuppa. If going out you should always make sure you have ate so as not to do this, eat all the biscuits.

When I lived with my parents and they were hosting, they'd just put out a few biscuits, enough for about one, maybe two each every time it was time for coffee and biscuits. Any host stupid enough to put out the whole packet, when they would think it rude if their guest ate them all, is really asking for it.

It's a rather good question and one I've often thought of. When I have guests, I like to see them eat all the biscuits. They might feel embarrassed, but it makes me feel a good host, and then I usually offer them a sandwich, just in case....

It is only rude if there is one huge plate of biscuits for a group of people. If you are served individually, then it is intended for you to consume. Otherwise, they will probably be wasted anyway.
