There are three oral medications:
acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex)
There is also a topical (cream) form of acyclovir.
I have personally used the cream acyclovir, acyclovir AND famciclovir. The only medication I haven't tried for my herpes is Valtrex. I think both acyclovir and famciclovir work great though. I'm currently prescribed acyclovir and take it when I am having outbreaks.

Valtrex (valacyclovir) is the prodrug of acyclovir - the former becomes the latter after you consume it.
Cidofovir, foscarnet and ganciclovir are other antivirals used against HSV, but these are more toxic than acyclovir, and may be less effective depending on the strain of the virus. Therefore, doctors will weigh risks versus benefits in the case of these drugs.

Acyclovir, and Valtrex are both oral medications. Zovirax is a topical medication. There's also Abreva over the counter for cold sores.

Valtrex seems to be the best medicine for it, both in controlling outbreaks and in transmission risk.
