For most people HPV DOES go away on it's own, but for some it does not. Even if a person is able to get rid of it, they can always contract it again from someone else.

The people who usually can not get rid of it are the ones who have a strain that causes warts or cancer.

***Also angel74 is just plain wrong. It IS an STD. In fact, it is one of the most common STDs out there today, with an estimated 75-80% of the world having it. Also, not every women is born with it. People have to contract it through some sort of sexual contact. Babies being born with HPV is EXTREMELY rare.

HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer in a woman. Most of the time the woman's immune system can fight off the virus and she may never have an abnormal pap smears. In other words, yes it can clear up on its own. But for some women, the virus does spread. There are many types of HPV, some causes warts and others can cause cervical cancer. Once you contracted HPV you'll have it forever. You can spread HPV to someone else. Talk to your doctor for more info on HPV.
