I had some tooth pain so I went to the dentist and they did x-rays. They said I have to get one of my wisdom teeth removed so they can do a root canal onthe tooth in front of the wisdom tooth, and I need an extraction on a broken tooth. Well when I started taking the antibiotic Amoxi 500 3x a day, I got sever pain on that side of my face from the teeth to my ear to my brain....I could not take the pain anymore and I went to the E. R. where they gave me percocet. My questions is why the pain came so hard after? and the oral surgeon cant see me till 10/20 over a month away....will this pain go away or atleast become tolerable? or will I be taking percocet till then?......Please help because I cant go to work while on this medication and I have a vacation planned in 10 days will I get better?

I go on vacation 9/21-26
do you think it would be possible to get a wisdom tooth extracted and the root canal done before then and be fine to go on vacation?.........or do you think the medicine will keep me till after my vacation..pain free?

Went to the dentist this morning. They said they were going to open it up a little to help with the infection......so they drilled...then they said that the wisdom tooth needs to come out and heal before they can do the root canal. They said to try and get the wisdom tooth out before we go on vacation, but it needs a week to heal. We are leaving on 9/21...i hope this can get done before we go....what do you think?

If you are in this much discomfort the oral surgeon needs to see you ASAP. Call them and tell them whats going on. It is not wise to be on Percocet for that long. You need to take the antibiotic for the surgeon can not remove the tooth safely. If he extracts the tooth that is infected the infection can enter the blood stream so you need to wait atleast that long for the infection to clear. Does the tooth hurt w/cold or heat? Does the tooth hurt when biting down? If so, the tooth is infected. Call the surgeon and let him advise you, he may not realize how much pain and discomfort your in. Get well soon.

Ibuprofen has always worked best for tooth pain for me, but you don't want to take too much, too often. How long before you have insurance? A lot of dentists will make payment arrangements with you, if you have a means to pay. Are you working at all? Could your parents or family help you? Sorry, I know how miserable tooth pain can be.

Wow.... sounds like you're having a rough time! I'm horrified to learn that they are delaying your treatment so much - perhaps you can find another surgeon to work with you sooner.

From a holistic side of things, I'd say working on the nerve inflammation would be priority number one. If you can find a holistic dentist in your area, please try for that - often you can get the pain relief you need without the root canal. Also...it almost sounds like trigeminal neuralgia, which is nerve inflammation that causes pain in the jaw, ear head and face. If the pain is that bad, you may want to also investigate this issue with a neurologist, just to be on the safe side.

Anyway, to numb the pain, put some clove or peppermint oil on a cotton ball and place it on the area that needs relief. Don't forget meditation & positive visualization, which can help put your mind in a better place to facilitate healing.

Example: See yourself from the outside... zoom in as if with a camera to the area which is in pain. What does it look like? Does it have an unusual color to it, or is the pain trying to give you a message? Just observe for a little bit and accept what is happening. Then bathe the area in cooling, healing light. Know that your body has the ability to heal itself.

I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

I doubt the antibiotic and the increase pain are related.

Many oral surgeons are booked out, but with your circumstances you should not wait. Your dentist should have more than one surgeon they refer patients to, so call back and explain what's going on. Chances are, the dentist can grease the wheels for you to get in sooner.

Are you flying on your vacation? Altitude can make things worse. If you have at least a week to heal after the surgery, you might be OK. Personally, I would hate to be away from home and have complications like a dry socket. (This actually happened to me and it was a nightmare.)

It is not recommended to stay on a narcotic like Percocet for extended periods of time. And I can't think of any jobs that you'd be OK to take Percs and still work, unless you were a matress tester.

tooth pain is a unique pain thats for sure .i have noticed that if i have a tooth ache the pain travels . it might hurt on the other side even.all i can say is;" kanka"you can buy it at major drug stores . if ya put a little on the area that causes the pain. it will numb yer whole head. they also have temporary filling you can buy. if you put the stuff in a cavity or hole that goes to the nerve, it will extinguish the pain. just dont jam it into the hole too hard or it will hurt. i had a big cavity and when it went thru i bout passed out from pain.i rolled up a little bit of the filling stuff and installed it. it lasted 6 months.

You need to contact your dentist tomorrow and ask for another referral to another oral surgeon. Why can't you go to work on Percocet??? No, do not wait until 10/20. If it was me and I am a nurse......I would be bitching a blue streak tomorrow. I know from expereince in the health care world....the squeaky wheel gets the grease!

well you might see if you can get in to see a different oral surgeon
you have to take all the antibiotics before they will do anything to your teeth
unfortunately the pain will probably get worst you will probably
the pain pills will work until you can get in to the doctor(if they gave you enough

Sorry i know from personal experience that teeth are very delicate and some times it takes longer to get in to see the dentist if you have a dental HMO

You can be orajel, qtips over the counter, they do work, as I had an abscess for a week until I could get my root canal done.
