The Christian doesn't carry a sword to kill infidels. The Christian offensive weapon, the sword given to us is the Spoken Word of God. The Truth of God sets us free. I only got a C in statistics. But perhaps I can give you some information about true Muslims and the peaceful religion of Islam.

I have used the Munir Munshey English translations of the Qur'an. At the Muslim websites below, you can choose from 10 acceptable translations to eliminate any misunderstanding because of translation from the "pure" Arabic. Also, you can read the whole sura so you get the entire context.

Among Muslims there are those who:
a) jihad in the path of Allah with their wealth and their lives (including those who sit at home but give asylum to mujahidin 4:74) = true Muslim
b) those who sit at home (and do not give asylum to mujahidin or jihad in the path of Allah)
c) the handicapped (does not count as a category)

In the Quran 4:95 it says:
The two are not equal: those who sit at home (and do not join the fighting) _ unless they have a reason; they are handicapped _ and those who [jihad] strive hard in the path of Allah with their wealth and lives. Over those who sit at home, Allah has excelled and elevated to a higher honor those who strive hard with their wealth and lives.
Compared to those who sit at home, Allah will award a far greater reward to those who wage a struggle.

8:74 Those who believed, left their homes and waged a struggle for the cause of Allah as well as those who helped and protected them are really the true believers. There is forgiveness for them and a generous rewards.

49:15 The (true) believers are actually those who believe in Allah and His messenger and then do not waver (and do not entertain doubts). With their wealth and their lives, they strive for the sake of Allah. Such are truly the sincere ones

Killing (qitl) and jihad in the cause of Allah is the hallmark of true Muslim believers. It is not a matter of moderate or fanatic. It is the distinction of a true believer or a rebel.

Do the leaders fight? Yes, sometimes they do, they fight and they get shot at and sometimes they die and become shahids (martyrs). All Muslims look forward to the day when the mahdi (guided one) comes and on to qiyahmah (resurrection day) to be a shahid is a great honor.

It is not lawful to make war upon any people who have never before been called to the faith, without previously requiring them to embrace it, because the Prophet so instructed his commanders, directing them to call the infidels to the faith, and also because the people will hence perceive that they are attacked for the sake of religion, and not for the sake of taking their property, or making slaves of their children, and on this consideration it is possible that they may be induced to agree to the call, in order to save themselves from the troubles of war… If the infidels, upon receiving the call, neither consent to it nor agree to pay capitation tax, it is then incumbent on the Muslims to call upon God for assistance, and to make war upon them, because God is the assistant of those who serve Him, and the destroyer of His enemies, the infidels, and it is necessary to implore His aid upon every occasion; the Prophet, moreover, commands us so to do."

well , let me try to give you the whole story, as i know it (if you have enough time):

first, all %s are approx. , i think that muslims in arab community are not less than 92% , because the major christian community % is in Lebanon where they form 40% of the lebaneese , but lebanon is all about 4 million people , but in Egypt they are less than 10% where egypt population is about 70 million , in Gulf countries (saudi arabia (25million) kwait , qatar ..etc ) there is less than 1% non muslims in all of them , iraq , syria , north africa , i think non muslims are less than 5% .

now , before i move to the next 3 questions , i wanna discuss some of the terminaology of your question :

jihad : jihad in islam means giving a big effort to do something you belive in , but in a general way is always used in giving that big effort to do something for the God , so if i as a muslim awaked up at dawn to pray , and i want to sleep , but i do that for God , so i'm doing a jihad , the same for fasting , the same for doing good to your parents or someone in need , and that good is hard to do or will cost you , so all that is a jihad .
one of those jihad or efforts for God , is when you fight for God at war, now you are doing the greatest thing , putting your own life in danger for your God , and if you died at that war , so you are a martyer , annd i think that this idea is repeating in all religions and in every mankind concept , i mean what kind of honor the soldier have when fighting on a war for america ? he is a hero , and what if he died in the line of duty ? he will be honored as a hero , and what if he sacrifiesed his own life to kill the enemy or to open a gate or defend it ..etc , wow , he would be a legend ...

the reward for jihad : generaly jihad is a good thing to God , so it is rewarded , but for the martyers ; they are promised heaven , becuase they sacrifised their lives for God , what about the 72 martyers? well , it has nothing to do with martyers , it was mentioned in a "hadeeth" which is something maybe said by prophet mohammad , and maybe not , that number canbe right and can be wrong , and any muslim can refuse to belive in that , becuase it is not something basic in islam or something mentioned in Koran ... the only sure thing in islam about martyers is that they will go to heaven , just likein any other religion , martyers go to heaven.

jihad war : now it is easy to explain : is when you are a soldier in a war defending your country , or directly defending your religion (if the war is religious) so if you did that effort in war , and risk your life bravely in that purpose , so you are in jihad in that war .

terrorism : we all know terrorism , it is using terror and killing the civilians to achieve a religious or a political goal .

islamic terrorism : the proplem of muslim terrorists is that they are people who mix "jihad" concept with terrorism , they idea is : the west is against "islam" as a religion because :
1- the occupied our lands for many years
2- they support israel to be istablished in a holy islamic land over the bodies of it's muslim inhabitans"palastinians" , and that israel they made as a crusador base to them in the lands of islam
3- they keep support israel against all surrowinding muslim countries which means , it is not something political but they (the west) want to control and humiliate muslims
4- even when security council try to say something right or honest about that , america use veto everytime to protect israel

so they conclude that "the west" and specially america is at war with islam , so by the rules of jihad we have to protect islam , even by owr own lives , so they do all the terrorism you know through that war they think they have .

the fault of those ideas is that :
1- there is no "declared" war from the west against islam and islamic countries, at least until 9/11
2- attacking civilians is not a "jihad" many of them are ignorants , have a false idea , peacefull people , even some of them could be muslims, so you cant do a mass killing among civilians for nothing and call it a jihad

terrorism organizations :
1-"al-qaeda" of osama bin laden , they adopt the previous ideas, so they are considered terrorists , but they belive in what they do for the reasons i mentioned
2- "Hamas" is a resistance organization formed from the palastinians as a resistance to israel , they refuse the istablishment of israel on the palastinians soil , and because israel used to kill dozens of palastinians they refused to consider civilian israelians as civilians , specially those in settelements because settlements were made by the israeli occupation, most settlers are armed ... now they were elected to lead the palastinian parliment , and made the government ... they used terrorist styles but now they dont because they became formal
3-"hizbullah" is the only organization i can tell they are not terrorists, because they were formed in lebanon as a resistance organization becuase of the israeli invasion to lebanon 1982 , and israel continued to occupy belligerantly south lebanon since then , so hizbullah were formed to resist that israeli occupation , they are on uniforms , well trained , and has a civil branch , they are represented in the lebaneese barliment , and build hospitals and schools , and do many charities , and they are very beloved in the lebaneese community , Europe refused to put them in it's list of terrorism organizations until after 9/11 when the angry america told Europe how you are against terrorism and refuse to put Hizbullah in the terrorism list? and at that time nobody can say no to america , so it happened.
