I am searching for my father and have some information that leads me to believe he changed his name. I have the suspected name but need to find out if it is the same person. Does anyone know what sites to go to check out name changes? Would appreciate any help.

I have used USA Trace with his SS# and they came up with a different name. I do not want to write to this man to ask if he is my father because I don't think he wants anything to do with his 5 kids - he hasen't tried to contact us in 47 years! I want to confirm that this man is my father before I take any steps to contact him.

I want to thank all for your answers. I did happen to get my fathers mothers names and was able to look her up. (She is now 90 years old.) I found out from her that my father did change his name and he passed away in 1996. The good news is that I was able to talk to my only living grandmother whom I have never met. I want to thank all who answer on Answers for all of the help and encouragement.

Hey D.A.F.F.Y.,

What a great question for the genealogy section. The person above mentioned SSN. That is a good answer! My kids are adopted, and even though their names were legally changed, I still have to report them as their previous name (for Fed Tax purpose), until it is reported with SSN - so that is one really good way.

In looking for how to change names, you can see that every state has a process. (I put web site for NY as example). That process includes your BIRTH CERTIFICATE. So, VITAL RECORDS for a person are affected by a legal name change. So, the same sites for VITAL RECORDS apply to name change as well as original name, you just need to keep in mind that somewhere there is an application for change of name that you need to request also.

Why don't you just write to the person and ask him if he has changed his name. You would need to go to the county records department in the state where he changed his name and purchase a copy of the record. You could try one of those investigative websites to see what comes up. Do you have his social security number. You could try to trace it with that.

id write to the man,his feelings may have changed, dont let fear of rejection stand in the way,cuz we have a right to know where we came from,,he might have departed on bad terms with ur mother and regret leaving his children behind,,or he could be like my x-husband with no heart and not give a rip,id try to find out either way,,my kids havent seen their dad in years but they know what he is about

If you have his SSN, you could have someone (USSearch or Intellius) run a search on it.
