Most people have some type of vegetable at a get together. Because I'm from the south, I have to ask if they've cooked it with meat so sometimes I try to bring something.
Often, if I am friends enough with a person, I gently remind them that I do not eat meat and suggest that maybe I can bring my own food if they are not able to supply it.
Big dinners, where it would be odd if I'm the only person not eating, I do call and I make simple suggestions for food. Like Macaroni and Cheese or pasta salad without the meat. I also suggest items that could suit both a carnivore and a veggie by placing the meat to the side something like spaghetti and meatballs where the meatballs can be added by anyone who wants them.

If you aren't certain that the person already knows your dietary preferences/restrictions, inform the host at the time of the invitation and work it out at that point. This is pretty common when people have food allergies - any restrictions should be made clear at the time of the invitation. Ask the host what they're planning on serving - if it's not something that works for you, ask to bring your own special food or decline the invitation. Do not ask someone to change the menu for you - that's rude, since they have been kind enough to invite you after all.

the best thing to do if u r vegetarian is to simply phone the one having the party and request that they prepare a set of dishes that are meatless and eggless...afterall they are the ones organising the event in the 1st place and its their responsibility to serve what you deserve to eat..of course, tell them in a polite manner...tat will do the trick...s 4 bbqs, ask the organiser to prepare a separate bbq pit n grill mock meat n tofu with certain veges such as potatoes and tomatoes instead of meat..and make sure that the sauce for the bbq isnt meat or egg based either..

I've been a vegetarian for 6 years and my family, who live close to me know it. Every holiday or get together they have, no one thinks about that. There is nothing there for me to eat. I have to bring my own food. My in-laws live 350 miles from us, but they remember that I am vegetarian and make sure I have something to eat.
Hey if all else fails, don't eat or start complaining(depending on where you are and who you are with of course)

most vegetarians make friends with other vegetarians and earth minded people who would never dream of cooking carcasses over a flaming pit, but if you do have carnivorous friends or family you can always bring some veggie burgers, or veggie links and ask them to throw a couple on the grill for you...

I think if you know they are vegetarian, the question should be how will the hostess handle it. You must provide vegetarian dishes for all and not upset your guests by serving meat.

I bring a veggie dish or two.If they want to sample, great; if not, more for me.If I don't have time to fix anything, I just scarf something from the fridge before I go.

Most vegetites make it well-known to all ( and muchlike religous/recovering or newfounds) they can't wait to cram thier veiws and ideals down your pie-hole!!!They bring plenty of tofoo...a ton of fiber-rich rabbit chow and lots of bland mushie bean-based soups that cause "loose-stool" from just smelling it!And the night would not be complete without the non-stop speech about "meat is murder".........but not all of them do this... some are cool and bring thier own food and everyone has a good time....

They gradually become part of a world full of vegetarians: their friends will tend to be other vegetarians and have "vegetarian barbecues" (whatever they would be).
