It takes a big person to accept this condition. Cooking and baking is NOT out of the question... in fact it is just the opposite! You now have a challenge... to learn how to cook foods that will become a permanent part of your life. There are many, many cookbooks for diabetics that will enable you to eat "normal" foods. Number one... SPLENDA... is a sugar that diabetics can use... and it is a sugar that can be used in ANY recipe... Buy SPLENDA and use it for your desserts and on you morning cereal... and in you coffee... any where you would use sugar... and there are many, many other brands that will help you... Sugarless Jello will help make jello salads and desserts... and there is sugarless ice cream... that is also low in fats that are good for diabetics. You need to get on line or find a Diabetic Help Group to help teach you what you can do with your foods... Go on line to Barnes & Noble or Amazon...and check out their inventory for Diabetic cookbooks... and books on Diabetic Foods...Go to your local library for books to help you learn about this and foods... find a local Diabetic Help Group...
Look upon this as a challenge... to become a better cook and baker... Good Luck!

OH, YES. I know how that feels. But what I try to do now: eat what you want in moderation (once a week, twice a month, etc.). If you really have a craving for something, use portion control and eat it. I repeat: in moderation only! Though some people are better at not eating sweet and salty food, some people's (me and a LOT of others) willpower are not that strong, so from time to time, I will eat something I'm not allowed to, just as long as it's not too often.
And please, don't do what I did: I made it an everyday occasion at first, but I didn't like how I felt when I went from high to low; makes me tired. Then the food that I ate isn't or wasn't so appealing after all.
But on the flip side, there's plenty of diabetic cookbooks out there that are dedicated to sweet lovers, and there are alternatives to using Equal, and even Splenda.

He is the MD that got glucose meters in the hands of patients.
You will be exposed to a lot of misinformation now re sweeteners.
One of their side effects is carb craving so they arent worth it.
Grow some stevia plants and learn to use them. They are a natural sugarless sweetener.

You can enjoy all parts of your life, including cooking and baking. My wife's aunt died at the age of 101. She had diabetes for 50 years. She was a great cook and we - my wife and I - enjoyed her cooking and baking for many years. And you can do the same. There's nothing stopping you except yourself.
