Human Papillomavirus, also known as genital warts

Human Papillomavirus is a virus that CAN lead to cervical cancer, and I've read it can lead to cancer of the penis also. Yes, it's considered an STD. About 95% of the women who have cervical cancer are found to have HPV. Many people have HPV without knowing it.

There are certain strains of the virus that can cause changes in cell tissue and can cuase genital warts and/or lead to precancerous conditions. If you have HPV, your doc should be able to test you for whether you have a high risk strain. Oddly, the virus sometimes disappears on its own, but better safe than sorry.

Genital warts generally don't hurt or itch and you may not have outward symptoms. Get checked if you think you've been exposed.

HPV is also the virus that causes regular warts on your hand or foot.

HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus. This is a very common sexually transmitted virus..HPV is transmitted sexually through intimate genital to genital contact, including vaginal or anal intercourse or only rarely through oral sex. Transmission can also occur during genital skin to genital skin contact without sexual intercourse. A small fraction of men and women with HPV will develop genital warts. Another small fraction of women with HPV will develop cervical changes. Most people will have no changes.

HPV virus causes genital warts. There are more than hundred HPV virus types. Only the type HPV6 causes anogenital warts. After one gets the virus, one may not get genital warts for months or years, but becomes a carrier. During that period, the affected person may pass on the virus to others. If you are in sexual relation with someone and if he/she shows no outer sign of warts, it does not mean that they cannot pass on the virus to you. Even they might be totally unaware that they are carriers.
