There was a time when pineapples where nice little yellow apples living in the forest; then one day the woods monster came by with its large red nails and its long curly hair trying to get those apples to do some strange and kinky things. The pineapples horror metamorphized the shape of such a gentile fruit into a spiked and dry way. It also became a bit acid. So the monster got herself a good japanesse knife and prepared the bes pina coladas with her own coconuts. And there it is, the legend of the tropical drunk munster woman.

Because the part you're eating is the root. Like potatoes. Those prickly sections keep the plant from toppling over.

It's a defense against being eaten. The fruit holds the secrets to the plants reproductive capabilites. If it's eaten or detroyed...the plant won't continue it's line.
