Popular legend has it that Marco Polo
introduced pasta to Italy following his exploration of
the Far East in the late 13th century; however, we
can trace pasta back as far as the fourth century
B.C., where an Etruscan tomb showed a group of
natives making what appears to be pasta. The
Chinese were making a noodle-like food as early as
3000 B.C. And Greek mythology suggests that the
Greek God Vulcan invented a device that made
strings of dough (the first spaghetti!)
Pasta made its way to the New World
through the English, who discovered it while
touring Italy. Colonists brought to America the
English practice of cooking noodles at least one
half hour, then smothering them with cream
sauce and cheese. But it was Thomas
Jefferson who is credited with bringing the first
"maccaroni" machine to America in 1789 when
he returned home after serving as ambassador
to France.
The first industrial pasta factory in America was
built in Brooklyn in 1848 by, of all people, a
Frenchman, who spread his spaghetti strands on the
roof to dry in the sunshine.

Pasta was developed independently in a number of places around the globe (though some anthropologists dispute this).
The earliest known records of noodles in Europe are found on Etruscan tomb decorations from around 400 BC.
Noodles dating back to about 2000 BC have been found near Lajia at the Huang He in Western China.

I was just going to ask the same question - hahaha! It's funny because it isn't really a common question!
I still believe it's Italy! I have no proof though! However, i too hear people saying that pasta was invented in China - especially lately - but i believe people just like to hear controversies and that's all. That's just my thought!

Pastapolitania. Sorry about that. Really, ever heard the comment ' state of the art ' ? They say this one invented this, that one invented that, I think it all happened all over the place at one time. Put a couple thousand years into preparing grain for supper you're gonna get bored. So that's what they all did. They also say it was the Egyptians who invented beer. I wonder how they kept it cold in that heat? Think that's what the Pyramids and Mastabas were really for?

Pasta - or noodles, to be more generic - was invented in China, and widely spread throughout the Far East long before European culture (Italy, to be more specific) began using them in native cuisine.
History shows that Marco Polo brought it back with him after his historic trek to the Far East and back.

China...Marco Polo brought the concept back to Italy. I also believe that he brought back the concept of Pizza from the Chinese as well (modeled after the scallion pancake)!

I believe that it was Chinese that invented it and the Italian brought it to the west!
Other than noodles, ice-cream also was invented in China (also in 13 century), the chefs in the palace mixed fruit puree with shredded ice and served it as desserts to the royal family in summer. (They stored the ice in the basement deep underground) The Italian put cream into this recipe and it became "gelato" (ice-cream in Italian)!
