I abhor that question too.. it's downright rude. I have many many reasons for being a vegetarian most of which are personal. Just like any religious beliefs are personal. I find the people who ask this type of question are very closed minded and do not want to consider any other type of thinking.

For me, it completely depends on who they are and why they're asking. If it's someone I have a rapport with and I think they're genuinely interested, I'll give 'em a couple of sentences (how I got started and a reason or two) and if they ask further I'm perfectly willing to give up some details. I have never tried to "convert" anyone, but if they want to engage in a discussion about it I'm not shy about making my point clear. If it's a stranger or a waiter or whatnot and the question is asked politely, I'll simply say I don't like the idea of killing animals for my food when I don't find it necessary. If it's a someone who doesn't know me and the question is presented as a challenge or is rude in any other way, that's when I'll get smart with them. Those people really don't care why... they just want you to know they disagree with you and they don't deserve any better than they're dishing out.

Without an answer you reflect the level of non-intelligence this choice of yours takes. God gave you a set of teeth for eating both meat and plants. So you have defied your god. Is this a sin or do you make liberal excuses for that too? I am so confused because you just don't have an answer. I don't eat shrimp because I don't like the taste. Am I sinning or am I OK because I do have a rational/reasonable answer. Just what are you going to do???????

Rude people really don't want or deserve an explanation so just give a look and turn away. On the other hand, I would follow Debi's advice. Give her the 10.

Ask them if they have a dog. If they say yes, say:
"You know, in some cultures, people eat dogs. If I don't want someone to eat my pet, why should I eat something that might be theirs?"

If I think they just want to argue with me about it, I just say,"Because I feel like it," and look straight at them.

It's not because I like animals, it's because I hate plants.
