People suffering from asthma often have allergic tendencies; a genetic predisposition is common. Constitutional homeopathic care (with the guidance of an experienced professional) can help to improve a person’s general health on deeper levels and possibly reduce the tendency toward asthma. Correctly-chosen remedies can help reduce distress during asthma attacks; however, emergency medical care must be sought in any serious attack. If a person has great difficulty breathing, looks very pale, has bluish lips, or seems to be very weak or in danger of losing consciousness, seek a doctor’s help immediately.
Arsenicum album: A person needing this remedy can feel exhausted, yet be very restless and anxious. Breathing problems tend to be worse while lying down, better when sitting up, and may begin, or be the most intense, between midnight and two a.m. Dry wheezing may progress to a cough that brings up frothy whitish fluid. The person can be thirsty, taking frequent tiny sips. General chilliness is usually seen, with burning pains in the chest and heat in the head. Warmth often brings improvement.
Carbo vegetabilis: This remedy may be indicated when a person feels weak or faint with a hollow sensation in the chest. Coughing jags can lead to gagging. The person may be very cold (especially hands and feet), yet feel a need for moving air, wanting to sit beside a fan or open window. Gas and digestive upset are also likely, and sitting up and burping offers some relief. Feeling worse in the evening, and worse from talking, eating, or lying down are other indications for this remedy.
Chamomilla: Asthma with a dry, hard, irritating cough that starts after being exposed to moving air, or after becoming overexcited and angry, may be helped with this remedy. The cough is often worse around nine p.m., and may continue into the night. The person seems hypersensitive and may be extremely irritable and agitated. (Children may even shriek and hit, though they often calm down if someone carries them.)
Ipecacuanha: Coughing spasms that lead to retching or vomiting strongly indicate this remedy. Wheezing can come on suddenly with a feeling of suffocation and heaviness in the chest. Mucus collects in breathing tubes, but the person has difficulty coughing much out. The person may sweat a lot and feel clammy or nauseous, be worse from motion, and sometimes worse from warmth.
Natrum sulphuricum: This remedy is sometimes indicated when asthma attacks are brought on by exposure to mold and dampness. The person may hold the chest while coughing, because it feels so weak. Wheezing and breathing difficulties are aggravated by exertion, and episodes tend to be worse in the very early morning.
Nux vomica: Indications for this remedy include a tense, constricted feeling in the chest during asthma attacks, with pressure in the stomach. Problems are often worse in the morning. Overindulgence in stimulants, alcohol, sweets, or strong spicy food can bring on or aggravate an episode. Both physical effort and mental exertion can make things worse, and warmth and sleep often bring relief. A person needing this remedy is typically very irritable and impatient, with a general feeling of chilliness.
Pulsatilla: Wheezing that starts when a person gets too warm (especially in a stuffy room), or after eating rich food, can indicate this remedy. Coughing brings up yellow-colored mucus, with gagging and choking. Tightness in the chest tends to be worse in the evening and at night, and is relieved by cool fresh air. A person who needs this remedy is likely to be changeable and emotional, wanting a lot of attention and comforting. (Pulsatilla is often useful in children’s illnesses.)
Spongia tosta: A hard or “barking” cough during an asthma attack is a strong indication for this remedy. Breathing can be labored, with a sawing sound, and not much mucus is produced. The person may feel best when sitting up and tilting the head back, or when leaning forward. Warm drinks may be helpful. The problems often start while the person is asleep (typically before midnight). Spongia is often used in croup, as well.
Homeopathy Dosage Directions
Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.
Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.
If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

I had bad asthma attacks between age of 5 and 9 but this cleared up when I started (and continued) running at least 3 times a week.
However - It is always best to seek medical advise as everyone's condition, age, environment and 'healing' propensity and opportunities differ.
In the East, the folks laud the curing effects of bats, crocodile meat and other exotic stuff (including coachroaches) on asthma but personally I've not seen any such cure. The best approach is to seek medical diagnosis, identify possible allergies and clear your home (if possible) of such allergens.

Hi - sorry to hear of your diagnosis. You don't say how old you are or how bad your asthma is. Basically it's a breathing difficult where your "air pipes" may be swollen or irritated due to allergens and you tend not to get as much air/oxygen into you as someone without asthma. Many things can cause it and it tends to go hand in hand with allergies, eczema and hayfever. It also tends to affect people whose parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles or siblings also have one or all of these. My 4yr old was diagnosed asthmatic at age 3 and we've really controlled it well although his case is reasonably mild....he's only had 4/5 bad attacks since he was born. His is controlled by a low dose steroid inhaler and a reliever inhaler (used only when he gets a bad cough -as the name suggests, to relieve him slightly). My advice would be to contact your surgery again as often they run an asthma "clinic" which is basically a nurse discussing it all with you. It would also be good if you joined asthma groups or forums online for advice and support. You can easily search online for asthma forums and advice. Unless it's a really really severe case, it shouldn't really affect the way you live your life. Just heed your doctor's advice and carry a spare inhaler with you everywhere if necessary. You may want to be careful around smokers though and perhaps make a note of any food or allergens that affect you so you know to avoid them. Some may suggest visiting a homeopath for a more natural remedy but I would not recommend this because we took our son to one before it was medically diagnosed as asthma and the homeopath did a kind of new worldy test on him and proclaimed he was allergic to lactose and to several ingredients in his baby vaccine. He's NOT allergic to lactose as later proper medical blood tests proved AND he hadn't had any baby jabs prior to going to the homeopath. We beat it out of there pretty quick and went straight to the GP (but made sure we asked for one who specialised in respiratory problems. Good luck with it.

First of all, for a sudden, acute attack ALWAYS use the medication your doctor has prescribed for you and get to an emergency room. "Natural" treatments can make living with a chronic illness easier, but don't totally abandon the gold standard of modern medical care unless you want to play Russian roulette with your life.
I would try some yoga deep breathing exercises. Along with back and chest stretches, these could (over time) help increase your lung capacity. A lot of people with breathing problems swear this has worked for them. At any rate, it's bound to help you relax, and stress reduction can make almost any chronic illness easier to manage. I definitely would talk to a doctor before starting any exercise program.
*If you hear of any herbs that are rumored to help with breathing, PLEASE remember this: If they really are strong enough to have any good effect, that means they are strong enough to have potentially dangerous "side effects," too - just like any other drug. Nothing you take internally - "natural" or not - is going to just magically work in one limited area without affecting other systems. Everything "in there" is connected!

well i know asthma is so annoying. cuz i have it. i had to go to the doctor and get 2 inhalers. and when i was little i had to get a spacer for one of my inhalers. one inhaler was an inhaler to take morning and night. the other one was if i was weezy and couldnt breathe that well then i would use that other inhaler. but something cool is that you can get flu shots early if you have asthama. HAHA!! and it is really bad if you dont get exersize when you have asthma. so if you havnt been exersizing and running then start now and start small. then keep running longer and longer. when i was little i didnt do that and we had to do the mile run. and i always failed it because of my athsma. then i got a bad grade for gym.

It can also be what you use to clean your home with. My daughter is immune deficient and she started having bad breathing problems (almost like asthma) She was put on albuterol. Doctor told me it could be caused to the harsh chemicals I used in my home to keep it a clean and steryl environment (bleech, Lysol, windex, detergents [on clothes], exspecialy aerosol air fresheners). I ended up finding a company who only sells all natural cleaners with melaleuca oil in it (this oil smells like eucolyptis, but was used in WW2 as and anticeptic [very safe]). She hasn't had any more symptoms since. The doctors even asked what I started doing different and urged me to keep using what I was using and suggests to his other patients. That's what worked for us.

This might sound daft - my mother had asthma all her life - she died recently with Altzeimers - from the moment the Altzeimers got a noticeable grip her asthma disappeared.

Best way is go to treatment in a salt mine. Don't know where you are, but look for some in your area. My cousin went daily to a salt mine and spent about an hour inside each day, for like two-four weeks a year. It goes away or the attacks get less and less.
