It is a custom in the US that dessert is always the last meal of the day and that nothing should follow it. Most Americans are surprised to know that British people eat wine and cheese after dessert. It´s just a matter of different customs.

If I ate dessert 1st, ( pie,ice cream etc.) I would
lose my appetite, some americans drink wine
without food but, I only drink wine with food.

I don't...I'll generally drink whiskey/vodka before the meal with my salad and then beer with the main part, then dessert at the end

please don't presume that we all do this. I don't even drink wine, it is nasty, I eat dessert whenever I want to as well
