Lots of different reasons. They may:
1. Genuinely want to experience every feeling that life could possibly offer them and experiment with the full range of potential human emotions and perceptual and mental states.
2. Be bored, and feel that using drugs is more fun than not using drugs.
3. Be curious, be exposed to drugs, want to know what all the fuss is about.
4. See others use them, want to try them to be social.
5. Be depressed, anxious, or any other negative emotion and feel the need to cover-up these feelings. (peer pressure falls into this category, it's not important enough to be a category by itself. it's not important than a person tries something because they see others trying it, it's important WHY they CHOOSE to do this.)
Drugs aren't good or bad. They're politicized. Most of the negative consequences of drugs either come ONLY from society's recent war on personal choices or are amplified by our counter-productive legal and educational systems.

Peer pressure, stupidity, stress, ignorance of the danger to them. Looking for a thrill they think will never happen again. "Just Once" Never is it just once. People do drugs for many reasons, some we just don't understand. I say this because my youngest daughter is on cocaine. We are trying so hard to get her off, she thinks she can do it along. A popular myth. She will get better when she is ready which I pray is soon DON'T EVER GET CAUGHT UP IN THE HELL OF DRUGS.

curiousity gets the best of them. possibly boredom. When you are bored sometimes the mind thinks of crazy things for you to do.
