If you want refried beans without lard you can have them. I fry beans with oil, even olive oil and they taste good. Whoever says that they have to be fried in lard is an absolute idiot.
Frijoles refritos en aceite por favor, !
"refried beans in oil please"
By the way I'm mexican and I freakin know how to make fried beans.

"Of course, they aren't refried then" This isn't true. Plenty of places make refried beans with a vegetable oil instead of a meat fat. In the US, it's usually only the smaller more authentic places that use lard. But even if they don't, if you are vegetarian, many places, large and small, use bacon seasoning/bacon grease in their beans, so you would also have to ask about that.

Worldlingo says that lard is "manteca de cerdo" - without is "sin" pronounced "seen".

I can tell you that our local mexican run place does not use lard in anything, neither does the one in town or the one up the street. So people saying that you can't get them are completely incorrect.

Refried beans aren't actually "refried", it's a mistranslation of the word "refritos" which actually just means "well-fried", and you cannot prepare "well-fried beans" without frying them in SOMETHING!

Why not skip the beans and have something else?

I hope you are avoiding the lard because of that fat and not because you are a vegan? There are plenty of other animal contents in mexican food other than the lard! Cornmeal is chock-full of bug parts!

Refried beans are MADE with lard...no getting around that. Ask them for black beans instead. They are just as good and low/non-fat.

If you don't want the lard then they will not be refried right. You can ask only for boiled beans .

Do you have any beans that is not fried in lard?=
Usted tiene frijoles que no esten fritos en manteca?
then they might ask you if you want them in oil(aceite)
or might look at you funny (considering what you asked its like asking for a pizza with out the bread)
