Fruits and vegetable both can be bruised. Ever see those brown spots on bananas? Those are bruises.

Anything freshly picked...like those beautiful fruits and veggies from your own garden or the local farmer's markets still has a potential life energy. Kirlian photography has picked it up even in fruits and veggies 3 days after being picked. Be careful not to put heavier fruits/veggies and lighter fruits/veggies. I accidently put a large cantaloupe on some tomatoes from our garden a few years back...yes, the tomatoes did bruise. They tasted still wonderful but they were discolored.

Yes, vegetables bruise easily, and bruising can definitely shorten their lives. And, unfortunately, good fresh natural/organic veggies bruise most easily of all, because they are not commercially bred to have sub-atomic half lives or treated with wax and chemicals and stuff. Keep your $20 -- sounds like you're going to have to give your veggies a decent zen burial and go buy new ones...

Not "injured", but bruised. Heaver fruits/vegetables should be on the bottom and lighter ones on top.

Well, I wouldn't put a canteloupe on top of a tomato. Generally speaking the fleshier fruits/vegetables should be on top of the heartier ones I guess...
