A couple of weeks ago I got myself tested for all STDs including HIV, I found out I had genital warts, all other STD came back negative, i had unprotected (silly I know!) sex with my partner 5 months ago, Im worried that although my tests came back negative, it was too soon to detect hiv, sphillus and herpes etc.
so my question is... how soon can STD screening/tests detect things such as herpes or hiv?

Don't listen to the other two on here!!!!! First of all Genital Warts are NOT herpes. Two different viruses. After 5 months, virtually all STD's would have been detected. I thought that a "sore" had to present to test herpes though, so I don't know about that one. As for HIV, most people test positive within 6-8 weeks. A negative test after 5 months would most certainly be conclusively negative. The CDC recommends that after extremely high risk encounters, such as a hollow bore needle stick involving an AIDS patient, testing is warranted out to 6 months. But as I stated before, given your scenario 5 months would be conclusive. The option to get tested again though is always there! I suggest you check out www.thebody.com Take Care!

Your doctor didn't tell you that you have herpes? See genital warts are herpes. As far as the HIV test I am not for sure, but for all the other STD's you should know the answer right away.
You should return to your doctor to get treatment for your herpes (genital warts) as soon as possible. There is no cure for herpes and you could have spreaded it to your partner. I believe Valtrex is the medication used to help prevent a breakout. Sometimes you can spread herpes when you are not in a breakout.

Gonorrhea/Clamydia - 1-2 weeks
Herpes - 2-3 months
HIV - 6-8 weeks
Syphillis - 4-6 weeks

These are very general. But good guidelines to go by. If you're sexually active, stay in touch with a physician to check regularly about your sexual health.

...and genital warts are NOT herpes. Genital warts are HPV (human papilloma virus); herpes is HSV (herpes simplex virus - type 1 or 2).
