On the front of the invite put "Come get Leid" and the party details inside! Then pass out leis when guests arrive! You can go to www.orientaltrading.com for tons of party supplies and decorations for cheap! Don't forget the little umbrellas for the drinks!! Appetizers... anything citrus is great! You can try a citrus glazed shrimp platter or get some pu-pu platters from your local chinese restaurant. A fun thing to have also is a stash of grass skirts, for guests to use for the party! And coconut bras for the ladies! I used to throw a luau every year, so if you want some more ideas, feel free to email!! Good luck!

Roast Pig would be perfect, but you will need to be able to dig a hole in the ground to cook it properly, and that may not fly with the flower beds or the landlord.

If you can't pit cook the pig, you can use a barbecue grill with a rotisserie and cook it that way... but it's a compromise...nope... a pig in a hole is the only true way for a Luau.

For a neat and different umbrella drink, try a Peruvian drink called Pisco Sours... look up the recipe... they're easy... just a handfull of ice, simple syrup and pisco run through a blender (you can make an entire blender full at a time) add a dash of angustura bitters to each glass (don't stir it in) and serve. Warning... these CAN get lethal after about the 4th one.

What time should I be there for the drinks and appetizers?

For decorations get some of those citronella tiki torches and light them, of course get the flower lays for everybody and mabey even grass skirts could be fun. Hang up the outdoor lights shaped in pineapples, you can get them at wal mart, and depending on how far you want to go buy some sand and cover up the backyard or grass somwhere, make it fell like a beach, get some seashells and place them on tables and on the ground too. Now, for appetizers try this:

Marinated spareribs are a favorite pupu or appetizer at many restaurants and family gatherings in Hawaii.

INGREDIENTS:

5 lbs spareribs
4 cloves garlic
1 large piece of ginger root, crushed
1 tsp salt (optional)
1 cup sugar
1 cup soy sauce
1 cup catsup
1/3 cup oyster sauce or fish sauce

PREPARATION:

In a large saucepan, combine the pieces of ribs, garlic, ginger and salt (optional). Add enough water to cover the ribs. Bring the contents to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until all of the ribs are tender. This should take about 1 1/2 hours.
When the ribs are tender, drain the ribs and set aside. Prepare a marinade with the sugar, soy sauce, catsup and oyster sauce. Fish sauce can be substituted. Marinate the ribs overnight in the refrigerator.

Place ribs on the rack of a broiler pan or on the grill. Broil or grill for about 8-10 minutes, basting frequently. Turn and broil or grill the ribs for an additional 5-7 minutes.

Serves about 20 for pupus (appetizers).

Hello. This sounds like a lot of fun. My neighbor just did her daughter's graduation party in this sort of theme. She bought a tiki bar from somewhere, i will ask where and get back to you if possible. It is really cute! You should have Mango Salsa for certain! We went to a luau in Hawaii and besides the Roast Pig, they also had something like polenta and lots of fruit, pineapple and such! Try this link, perhaps it will help.
You could google "luau recipes" and see if that helps! Have a great time!

Essential Luau Food is best catered out unless you plan to dig a pit, line it with taro leaves, and roast the whole pig. Common foods include:

Kailua Pork - slow roasted pork with a nice smoky flavor
Pork Lau Lau - pork cooked in taro leaves
Lomi lomi salmon - salmon with chopped tomatoes and onion
poi - mashed taro paste
Haupia - coconut jello/pudding dealy

More local Hawaiian BBQs include
Korean Kal Bi ribs
Chicken Katsu - bread deep fried chicken cutlet
Poki - sashimi tuna marinated in soy, hawaiian chili flakes, sesame oil and seaweed.

For decorations, tiki torches with citronella are nice to keep the bugs away.

Hawaiian shirts for the guys and floral dresses for the gals.

How fun! For inexpensive decor items, look into www.orientaltrading.com. Pick up a copy of this month's SELF magazine with Hillary Duff on the cover. There is a big article inside one what to serve for a chic summer party and they have a great recipe for a watermelon punch. For your own look for the party and for party favors or party gifts (giving everyone a lei as they walk in the door, etc...), check out Breezy Beach Wear at www.breezybeachwear.com. They offer dozens of great colorful silk flower hair clips, silk flower sparkling leis, and great beach inspired jewelry! Have fun!

Try coconut shrimp with a sweet and sour dipping sauce.
2 cups shredded sweetened coconut
2 cups bread crumbs
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 cups all-purpose flour
4 large eggs, beaten
24 large shrimp, peeled and deveined
Vegetable oil, for frying
Dipping Sauce:
1/2 cup orange marmalade
1 to 2 tablespoons dark rum

In a large bowl, combine coconut and bread crumbs and season with salt and pepper. Place flour, eggs, and bread crumb mixture into 3 separate bowls. Dredge the shrimp in flour and shake off excess. Next, dip the shrimp thoroughly in the egg and rub against the side of the bowl to lightly remove excess. Finally, coat the shrimp thoroughly with the bread crumb mixture. Lay out the shrimp so they do not touch on a parchment-lined baking sheet or platter until ready to fry. In a large Dutch oven, heat several inches of oil to 350 degrees F. Fry the shrimp in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 3 to 4 minutes per batch. Be careful not to overcrowd shrimp in the oil while frying. Drain on paper towels.
For the Dipping Sauce: heat the marmalade in a small saucepan over low heat. Thin with rum as desired.
I like to add mustard for tart.

Make Poi. The U.s. doesn't carry that specific Root that grows under round, but the closest thing to it is a Potato, but you will need Nutmeg to add to it when it is mashed. They call it Poi.

The next thing you need is to get Green Bananas called Plantains at your nearest Grocery store...Winn Dixie sales them and Piggly Wiggly. Peel the Green Banana and cut it in section of three. And then smash the green banana flat and place it in a skillet and fry it up till golden brown. Then lay out to dry on a napkin and salt it down..talk about good.

Type luau recipes in search engine on internet and you'll come up with a wide variety of web pages that give recipes for food and drink.

Martha Stewart had a couple cute ideas. She stapled cheap grass skirts around the bar she had made from scrap lumbar. I t looked like it should be on the beach. She strung lights, and put each single light throgh a artificial flower. She bought Ti leaves and twine, and tied them around the ice bucket. There was more, go to her site if you want, I thought it was all cute, and adult.
