Genital herpes (herpes simplex 2) can be spread to your mouth by giving oral sex to someone who has genital herpes. It is rare to be spread this way, but it can happen. Even if the person is not on an outbreak they can be "shedding" the virus, which can cause you to get it. The safest thing (besides not giving oral sex at all) is to use a condom with someone who has genital herpes. Typically genital herpes are spread by having sex and oral herpes, or cold sores, are spread by kissing someone with cold sores, or even sharing chap-stick or lipstick with them.
I have had genital herpes for 5 years now, and my fiance has only had it about 8 months. We do have oral sex (and don't use any kind of protection) and neither of us has cold sores (herpes simplex 1) on or by our mouths.
To be safe though, its always a good idea to wear a condom, or insist the guy does. Condoms are not 100% effective, but they are the best thing to use to prevent getting an STD other than abstinence.

Its possible, but you are taking a chance. If there is a sore, why not wait a couple of days? As for viral shedding (Passing on the virus when no sore is present) I'm not sure how it works for HSV 1, It certainly occurs with HSV 2. If protection is used and there are no open sores, it is a pretty safe activity. No activity though is 100% safe, and you are taking a small risk. But it sounds like you have given oral before this occasion, and 25% of the population has genital herpes, Chances are you have already been with someone who has had it if you have been with 4 or more people. Hope that helps!

Herpes can be transmitted from mouth to genitals and vice versa. As the adds for herpes medication say in the small print at the bottom of the screen, "herpes can be transmitted even when there is no outbreak." As far as I know, HIV, can also be transmitted from mouth to genitals, and vice versa. When I double checked this with my doctor he said it is very hard to catch HIV from oral sex. I don't know about you, but where HIV is concerned, "hard to catch it", just doesn't cut it!
When I was married, when either my wife or I had a cold sore,
(herpes), we would never give oral sex to the other person. Neither one of us had genital herpes and we didn't want to get it.

Even with the condom there is a real chance you will contract the virus. Just don't do it. Once you have it, it's forever.
