I don't understand this. The government should offer STD tests for free yet a single screening will cost close to $100.00 for family's of low income this is not fair. Everyone's at risk, no matter your income, wouldn't this be something to lobby for change. Is there free tests or do they always cost money? Is there no way to do a self test? I'm not saying this just for me, I'm talking about entire countries. I understand some countries aren't quite developed enough to have a government which can support such a luxary however for those that are, these tests should be given out like candy. What do you think?

Because they are at risk at infecting you! Not all STDs are obvious, some stay dormant for quite some time which means your girlfriend or boyfriend may have one and give it to you.

In the US, public health clinics are everywhere, STD screening and treatment are provided free of cost-depending on income, whether the person has insurance, etc. These services may not be around the corner as with some places but are usually fairly nearby. Other developed countries have similar programs.
In under-developed or third world countries, there are pretty large programs paid for by the primary governments with assistance from other governments such as those for HIV-in Africa and other resource poor countries. Testing everyone requires an infrastructure that allows for people and equipment to get to the places where they need to be. The willingness to help may be there but the roads and utilities may not so sometimes the problem is not the help itself but how to get it there and how to perform the needed tests. Putting this assistance in continents like Africa becomes yet more complicated because it's very resource rich-gold, diamonds, oil-but with a very small population in control and perhaps not willing to help it's neediest citizens......It's complicated but there are systems out there working on it.
Because of the nature of STDs, it would be difficult to do STD screening at home-until some type of low cost, transportable blood tests are developed for all STD.

Your absolutely right, A lot of STI's do lay dormant. Why should the Government pay? Um, its their job as the Governing body to ensure the health of its people maybe??? I don't know where you are from, But where I am from the STi tests are free, as is pretty much all other medical needs. I think if you look around, there is probably some free HIV testing at the very least. Good luck!
