Tomatoes tend to crack when they receive irregular water. If your tomatoes have gone through a dry spell and you try to make up for it with frequent waterings, the inside of the tomato will plump up faster than the outside can stretch and grow. As a result the outer skin of the tomato splits open or cracks. They are still edible though just won't keep as long.

My mom always told me that it was because they became to ripe. It doesnt hurt you, you can still eat them, but it's just where the "gut's" of the tomato expand and it cracks the skin.

i have noticed that my tomatoes will crack after a dry spell --then a lot of rain--they grow too quickly--try to water them on a regular basis.

if you mean why do they crack on the vine, it's from overwatering

otherwise, they crack when they start to spoil.

Pick them when the are still green , let them ripen
on a window sill
