Skip the usual flowers, wine or fruit salad. Bring something that caters to your host's likes. For example, if he/she likes margaritas, bring a bottle of Tres Generations tequilla and a set of shot glasses. If he/she really enjoys BBQ'ing, get some gadget they can use for the grill. If it's a gift for everyone at the BBQ to enjoy, get a yummy ethnic dessert to add some contrast to the All-American fare, i.e. a sweet potato pie or cheesecake, italian pastries, baklova, etc.

I like to bring homemade cookies or some sort of "comfort food" sort of side dish (baked beans, potato salad, pasta salads...etc.) but just about anything edible is great for parties.

A BBQ is always in need of coleslaw or beans, chips and dip or cheese and crackers.

And if the hosts have kids, bringing a little something for the kids is a great idea.... pez dispensers are a fabulous and cheap trinket that kids LOVE.

Assuming I knew the person well and if I knew the bbq'd often I would bring them something that had to do with bbq'ing. My brother has all the tools but I sometimes take him new manirating sauces or bbq sauces that he may not by for himself.

if you are friends with the hosts, ask them b/c when planning a bash, the hosts sometime forget something or are missing something. for example, in addition to the salad i'm brining, my hosts said they were short on dessert so i am bringing a cheesecake.
