Primary hypertension is BP that persists for years inspite of medication and rises when medication is stopped. Secondary BP may be associate with a particular cause or stress.

Primary, essential, and idiopathic hypertension mean the same.The other type is a "secondary", "symptomatic" hypertension has a curable cause.
