I've been a diabetic for 22 years and have learned a lot about what to eat and what NOT to eat. I've found that as far as fruits are concerned, grapes, watermelon and strawberries send my blood sugar levels through the roof! Everyone's different, so I suggest "experimenting" in a very controlled environment and do so very cautiously. Experience is the best teacher and you'll get to know your body than anyone else could. There's many books out there that explain which foods, including fruit, are good for diabetics and which ones to stay away from. yes if you have high blood sugars it isnt wise to drink concentrated fruit juices but if you are low ie between 4 and 6 you can have it to get your sugar levels up, ie before exercise or insulin.

have fruit at meal times or for snacks if you are on that type of insulin regime. but remember that fruit isnt a complex carbohydrate which is what keeps you going until you next eat. Please dont loose heart as diabetes doesnt mean you cant have fruit. it just means you have to make sure you eat it at the right times during the day. I am not a health professional so please dont take what i say as gospel. i am just a mum with a child with type one diabetes mellitus. Talk to your diabetes specialists, i find some doctors are not specialised in this condition so can be a little vague.

Diabetics can eat fruits in moderation.

It is probably a good idea to include fruits only with regular meals and not on their own, which helps balance out the carb picture. Having fruit on its own can cause a glucose spike in some people, so that is why eating fruits with meals is the best.

If you are on oral anti-diabetic medication, avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice which seems to interfere with many different kinds of medications.

If your type of Diabetes leave you occasionally low in sugar, it may be a good idea to have small portions of sweetened juice around to deal with hypoglycemic reactions.

Yes your Gp is right some fruits ARE high in sugar like Banana's and strawberries so if you fancy some sweet tasting fruit only have a small portion. Also don't eat the same fruit everyday vary it day to day so you don't overload on sugar.

Yes, diabetics can eat fruit of all kinds. It is the carbohydrate count that is important. All carbohdrates are converted to sugar in the body and you need sugar, it is the energy your body uses to function. (like a car needs petrol) Regular balanced meals are important and fruit is just as important in the diabetic diet as any other healthy eating plan.

Food which releases sugar slowly is better than food which provides instant sugar, apples are particularly good for this.

Yes, and albeit most fruits contain various levels of sugars, they're not refined sugars of which are extremely bad for diabetics, thus most fruits contain natural sugar, of which when properly balanced with proteins, has positive results.

all the fruits are safe to eat in moderation. follow the ''5 a day'' logo meaning that you should consume AT LEAST 5 portions a day of fruits and veg. when eating fruits do NOT peel them eg apples and pears because the peel takes more time to digest i.e. your blood glucose will not elevate too quickly. also, try to combine them with something wholemeal eg. a slice of wholemeal bread or a rice cake and you should be fine.

They're fine. IT's better than something because it has natural sugar. The trick is quanity. You can't eat 5 apples but you can have 1. Just watch your portions and you can eat fruit at every meal.
