Are you at risk based on heredity?
Make sure to get yearly check ups at your doctor. Request a glucose test if he/she does not recommend it.
In the meantime, exercise helps burn glucose. If I sit around on the computer all day (at work), my glucose levels are high. However, on the weekends, when I'm out and about doing things, my glucose levels are normal. Stay active.
It is very important to eat and to eat proper foods. You don't want to eliminate all carbohydrates from your diet. Your brain requires carbs in order to function.
I also eat 6 SMALL meals a day. This helps keep the glucose level in your bloodstream at a constant. An example of one of these meals is one half of a peanut butter sandwich (on whole grain bread) and an apple.
Make sure to eliminate unnecessary sugars in your diet (soda pop, sweets, etc.). I find Splenda to be the best thing since sliced bread! It is sugar, but the "bad" carbohydrate is removed from it. It's expensive, but it tastes just like sugar.
Eat whole grains when possible. Also be sure that whole grains are STONE GROUND. Stone ground grains are lower in simple sugars than regular whole grain (go figure!).
Studies have also shown that including a teaspoon of cinnamon or cloves in your daily diet helps regulate glucose.
Good luck!

Even skinny people can have diabetes
1. Eliminate processed foods from your diet, especially white sugar and white flour products. These products dramatically stimulate the production of insulin in the body and over time will promote the vicious cycle of high and low blood sugar levels.
2. Include all unprocessed foods in your diet, such as proteins, complex and unrefined carbohydrates, vegetables, whole grains and legumes (beans and bean products) especially soy based products.
3. Eat foods that support the functions of the spleen and stomach. In other words, avoid overly greasy foods, ice cold drinks, alcohol, raw and uncooked foods, hot, peppery foods, coffee, and too much fruit. Avoid daily juice drinks since these also overly stimulate the production of insulin.
4. Stop drinking sodas. Sodas are acidic in nature and loaded with sugar and chemicals. Sodas are detrimental to both the spleen and the kidneys.
5. Find some type of exercise that you really enjoy and just do it! Pumping iron is not for everyone. You would probably benefit most from some kind of cardiovascular exercise to keep to blood moving, like swimming, yoga, stretching, and bicycling.
6. Take a walk every day. If you live with a dog or cat, play with them daily. Animals live in the moment and love to play. This is a great way to break stressful daily routines.
7. Practice Chinese self massage every morning by stimulating the acupoints on the body and limbs to help promote the flow of qi and blood in the channels.
8. Buy some relaxation tapes with guided imaging. Learn how to really relax. This means bodily relaxation as well as mental repose. Use these tapes daily for the best results.
9. Take a look at the old habits and patterns of your life and ask yourself what you can do to make your life better. Take up tasks and hobbies that are interesting to you and break the normal routine of your day.
10. If you know that you have too much stress in your life, then find a solution. This may be finding a new job or new, more supportive relationships. Understand that stress alone can kill you, and if you smoke and consume alcohol to escape stressful situations, you are only fooling yourself.

Some things you can prevent:
a. Maintain a healthy body weight;
b. Eat a healthy, balanced diet;
c. Deal with other medical conditions, such as hyperlipidemia
or high glycerides, before they progress further.
d. Exercise regularly; and
e. Get frequent medical check-ups (at least annually).
Sometimes, however, Diabetes cannot be prevented because some medications you may be on can cause Diabetes or it can be a genetic factor in your family. Further, if it is Diabetes I, they don't really know how that can be prevented.

There's a genetic disposition in every person who suffers from diabetes.
If some of your direct relatives ever developed the illness you should control your blood sugar periodically.
Avoid overweight, walk every day or play sports.
Test your blood sugar every year or sooner.
If you are not close to the higher limit, you will be OK.
If some analysis ever get close to 120, you should take care of your diet, avoiding easily absorbed sugars, contained in tubercles, sodas, bread, pasta, etc.
