I'm 23 and really want to go to Ireland to travel/live/work. What do I need to do? I have no idea how things work over there as far as housing/jobs, etc, especially since I'll be coming from the US. I don't have a set city/county I want to go to, I'd like to travel around all over eventually when I get there but as far as where to initially live and work I have no idea what's best. I'd prefer to be somewhere with more of the "traditional" Irish culture rather than a crazy New York City type atmosphere.

I've also heard the wages are really low in Ireland so I don't know where that would put me either. I don't need to make crazy money, maybe just enough to live and go out now and then/travel. I don't have a ton of experience in any specific field, I like to try/learn/experience new things so I'm not too picky about jobs and am pretty open minded.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Well, I'm 23 and I'd planned on traveling through Ireland this summer, just kind of wandering and staying at hostels, nothing fancy, I wanted the real experience I guess. But, that didn't work out. Now, there's a rare window of time in my life where I don't have any obligations or responsibilities. I could leave town right now and not have to make one phone call. So, I just thought I'd ask around to see, if by some crazy chance, someone knew of a program or a way I could do the Ireland thing. I've researched volunteer programs but they generally are very narrowly focused (and you don't travel, you just stay in one town). I'm from the US, so that's another problem possibly. Something ideal would be where I could work/volunteer in exchange for room/board or something, and would also have the opportunity to explore more of Ireland than the touristy places. Also, I'm not a student, so those programs are out too. I know it's a long shot, but if I don't try I won't know. Thanks!

I'm charged full rate for a weekly bus-pass from Galway to Tuam, (doing my bit for the environment) and all the seats are always occupied when I get on. It's ridiculous! Can anyone empathize?
