I have trouble grasping this concept. If a Hydrogen atom has 1 electron, if it gains an electron (which is the only possibility; it can't possibly lose all of its electrons, yes?) then it becomes negative. Is there such a thing as an H- ion, then?

Acetylene(gas) has a low value for heat of formation
+ 226.6 KJ/mol
my teacher tells me that is has a lot of potential energy? but how? is it because it is endothermic? if so why would it do that?
