How do TV channels know if a show is popular or how many watched an episode or how many people watched a game/match? How do they know if they should continue with a show or not?

I was watching "Medium" tonight and fell asleep :( I was about halfway through the second episode of season three (which just started tonight here in Australia-the second half of the two-parter where people were breaking into houses and shooting families). They had just brought a guy into custody regarding the deaths of those people, I think he was wearing glasses. What happened for the rest of the episode?

Also, where can I go for a detailed episode guide for "Medium" that includes season three, and are transcripts of the episodes avaliable anywhere? Please don't refer me to tv.com; it's a great site, but doesn't have detailed episode guides for season three at the moment.

I keep noticing it when one of the children are being babysat - they are always 'with the Petersons'. I noticed it again today in a series 3 episode. A child told his father his sister was 'with the Petersons'. This must be a nod to someone or an inside joke and i'd like to know the story if anyone can enlighten me!
