The subway air was dank and cold, commuters numbly filing in quiet, damp columns in and out of the station. You always hated Monday mornings. But this one was particularly difficult.
"Goodbye, forever," I said....again. Still, you looked at me dumbstruck.
A woman towing two children behind her looked at us briefly, frowned, and kept going up the escalator.
"That's it?" you said, finally. "After everything you and I fought for, and promised each other, you're leaving?"
"Yes."
The word had barely left my lips when you slapped me. I recoiled, massaging the searing flesh with my free hand. Then I watched you storm away, your serene lilac overcoat quickly swallowed up in the teeming blue mist, the roar of trolleys obscuring what I imagined were your soft, yet heaving, sobs.
"Tough break," murmured a vagabond, who'd watched from the dumpster.
"Mmm," I said, still rubbing my cheek. But inside, I smiled.
The last Chocodile back home was finally ALL mine......
