We've been trained by life to react to certain stimuli. For instance, when we're driving and we hear the sirens of emergency vehicles, we snap to attention, look around, and pull over. When we're sleeping and hear our alarm clock go off, we're startled and our adrenaline starts rushing.
It just seems downright bastardly of musical artists and radio stations to use sirens when a huge fraction of their listeners are driving, and alarm clock buzzers in cheap local commercials are flat-out evil.
Do you feel the same way, or am I just particularly irritable?
