There is nothing new about keeping a diary, but putting it online where other people can
read it is a fairly recent trend. A growing number of people are doing just that by setting up websites where they write about their daily activities, feelings, and opinions. There people are bloggers and there are estimated to be more than 60 million of them on the
Internet.
A blogger is someone who makes a "weblog," or " blog." This is a website containing
writing and sometimes photographs that is updated regularly. Websites like this began
appearing a little over ten years ago, but the term "weblog" wasn't coined until 1997.
This was later shortened to "blog," which is now the more common form.
Blogging has only recently caught on in Taiwan. Most bloggers are young people who write about issues that concern them, such as fashion, romance, or schoolwork.
The 10 majority of blogs elsewhere are similarly concerned with personal matters and are mainly read by the blogger's family and friends. However, the most popular blogs attract thousands of visitors daily.
The main reason blogging has taken off is that it is easy to do. Setting up a blog is no
more difficult than applying for a web-based e-mail address. Just log on to one of the free15 hosting sites like Blogger. com and follow the instructions. Taiwanese bloggers can use Google or Yam to search for a website that provides free space foe setting up one's own blog. If you enioy writing and have a talent for it, you may decide to join the blogging world. You could be connected with a potential audience of millions tomorrow.
