I've never heard of this. There are new meter's out there that hold a drum of strips so that you don't have to put a new one in every time. I think 10 strips at a time or maybe even more. And also kits with no coding. But as far as I know they all require some form of strips. I could be wrong here.
ETA: What your dad may have heard is "No strip handling".

The meter that uses a "drum" that the others are referring to is the AccuChek Compact meter. It uses strips but there is no "strip handling". You load the cartridge into the meter and the meter "spits" out the strip to be used for the sulgar check. Each cartridge contains 17 strips.
What your father probably heard was "no strip handling".

I believe there is a product out there to go onto insulin pumps that clips on and checks your bgl's also, I remember a few years ago there was a bracelet type device that somehow did bgl's too, it even beeped if you got too high or low (which would of been good with little kids etc)

Sorry, I think your Dad was hearing things. There is a glucometer that doesn't require you to CODE your test strips each time (which is done when you open a new box or bottle), but I don't think there is one that can work without a strip.
If you think about it, how would the meter stay accurate without a new strip each time? That would be like, rinsing out and re-using the same cup for a urinalysis...which sounds kinda funny actually...

I think he was hearing about the new "barrel" type of strips, they are still strips, but they are loaded differently.

There is a new type of sticker. But they all require test stips.
