well i guess the original american chilli was just beans and suace type thing. chilli con carne is the traditional chilli with meat and peppers and beans ect.

chili means pepper very hot and finely tapering of special pungency

Everybody has missed it so far... the American Chili descends from the Mexican stew Chilito which is made with Guajillo chiles, garlic, onions, spices & thickened with masa. Street vendors in Northern Mexico (were it was popular) would have a pot of the Stew bubbling... and then a bunch of ingredients available to add to order... some potatoes, mushrooms, cactus, beans or a stir fry of tomatoes & rehydrated sun dried beef, or shredded beef (THE carne)... eventually in the U.S. the only versions that became really popular were the beans & the sun dried beef.
As Chili became really popular in the U.S. during the early 20th century people started making it with Ground Beef which was readily availabe and much easier to prepare than the sun dried or shredded beef.
Nowadays... the distinction is irrelevant... Americans really only make Chili with Ground Meat so its basically all Chili con Carne.

Originally the word "chile" (pronounced and spelled chili by American English speakers) refers to all the peppers.
Chile con carne translates to peppers with meat.
Since then a wide variety of recipes have emerged.
