I know it sounds like a dumb question. But I asked my dad to get me California rolls and he came back with real sushi. Can you actually eat raw fish?

yes, the raw fish is called "sashimi".

some fish can be eaten raw. it's all safe. as long as you get fish that is 1) sushi quality. and 2) fresh.

1) sushi quality because all freshwater fish can be infested with parasites, to kill them. you have to cook the fish, OR as the FDA requires.. freeze the fish in a deep freezer that can reach -15 to -40 deg below zero. tuna is a ocean fish living far away from land so they don't really get parasites. most fishmongers do freeze tuna as requird by the FDA, but some don't.

2) fish has to be fresh, and kept refrigerated... to prevent bacteria from spoiling it and converting the fish proteins into histamine, a toxin that causes food poisoning, and allergy attack.

Yes! Of course! If it hurt you it wouldn't be available. I'm an avid sushi fan so I'll try and tell you the most I can about it.

First, all sushi is "real" sushi. Unless it's from Trader Joe's. Ew. Anyways, there are several different kinds of sushi. Nigirizushi, which is probably the kind you have, is the typical raw fish on top of rice. Makizushi are rolls [such as California rolls], and Tamakizushi are long cone shaped rolls.

The main ingredients of sushi, raw fish and rice are naturally low in fat (with the exception of some rolls and western style rolls), high in protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. In addition, sushi that has seafood as an ingredient is often an excellent source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which lower the risk of blood clots and decrease triglyceride levels. The fresh vegetables in most sushi also have essential vitamins and minerals. The seaweed wrapping for these rolls is rich in micronutrients and phytochemicals.

On the other hand, some fish such as tuna can carry high levels of mercury and can be hazardous when consumed in large quantities[such as eating sushi everyday for a year]. Consuming raw or undercooked seafood presents the risk of anisakiasis[I have never contracted it, not have my friends and I have been eating sushi all of my life at least twice a month]. A few cautions if you are an avid sushi eater but have high blood pressure or are pregnant or nursing. Sushi made with seaweed tends to be a little higher in sodium, as is the soy sauce that each piece is dipped in.

California Rolls are 'real' Sushi. Sushi refers to the rice. Not the raw fish, which is called Sashimi. Many have eaten Sushi with raw fish and have had no proplems. the Japanese have been eating it for years. I have eaten it and I am still here. Many others have eaten raw fish and are still here.

Duh!

Yes, you can eat it.

Its delicious if made by a trained professional.

And don't let anyone say stuff about bacteria. Sushi is SUPER fresh. The fish is often killed seconds before the chef begins preparing it. There isn't enough bacteria in a live fish to cause problems. Its only when its been dead a while (and not kept cold) that the real problems begin.

Yes you can and most Japanese do. However, Doctor friend of mine say that raw fish is just as bad as raw meat and can carry a whole range of different bacteria , some of which could make you really ill, however I have eaten suhimi (raw fish sushi)many times without any problem.
