On the eve of Chinese Lunar New Year, there will be a family reunion dinner. Basically they have all sort of food, appetisers, soup and main course. It is different from one region to another region. As I am from the southern China of Fuzhou tribe, we have Fuzhou wantan soup (grey colour wrappers unlike the yellow ones. This is what distinguishes Fuzhou from other tribes), fresh springrolls, pork dishes(stew and fry), chicken, steamed fish, vegetables, grilled pork and dessert like sticky rice with fruits and syrup.
Then we will cheer with beers and jasmine tea.
On the first day of Chinese New Year, it will be all vegetarians. No meat or eggs at all.
If you want recipes, go to www.thestar.com.my. Hope this website will help you with your selection of menu. Bon appetite.

Chinese New Year is 18th of February this year. It's more than a one day celebration, too, it's quite different from ours.
On new years day, it's traditional to eat a meal with fish, and dumplings. It's quite similar to our Christmas Dinner, but with a lot more food.
Wikipedia has a lot of information on this, including examples of food they like to eat, and what they do on each day of the New Year festivals.

Chinese new year is on a different day than in other places around the world. There are all sorts of new year's foods they eat -- things that are only made for new years and not available the rest of the year.
Basically the Chinese calendar is correct and accurate while the one we use in N. America is so faulty; that's why their new year is on a different day. I think we should all switch to the Chinese calendar... no more leap years, no moths with different amounts of days... etc.

They will feast starting on February 7th, 2008, continuing for 15 days. Some food items are listed on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_new_year#Food_items.
It includes dumplings, vegetable dishes, and many different types of cakes.

We celebrate the "New Year" on the day that Chinese New Year falls on. And it's different every year because the Lunar calendar is used. On the year 2008, the Chinese New Year will fall on Febuary 7.
Some traditional foods are fish, chicken, noodles, steamed rice "cake", steamed bread, amongst other foods. A lot of other foods eaten are phonetically identical with other words. These words include "fortune", "luck", "prosperity", "long" (as in life), stuff like that. The foods differ from regions in China, as well, as the dialect spoken would influence the words and stuff.

You could go to a Chinese restaurant and order dim sum. That way, you'll have a variety of foods to try out. It's what a lot of families do, actually.
