there are 3 types of scallops. sea scallops, bay scallops and calico scallops.
sea scallops are huge, 1 1/2 inch in diameter. bay scallops are small, about 1/2 inch diameter.
sea scallops are normally wild caught by dredging and stripping the ocean floor of everything, severely damaging the ocean environment. Most bay scallops are farmed in china, but no damage to the environment. there are also wild bay scallops from new england. these are hard to find, and expensive, but they are the best tasting scallops you can buy.

Okay, Sea Scallops are larger. Yup. I'm not sure ther is any legal definition her, though might be.
Yes there is a difference. From the answers you will note size first. Next, Sea scallops usually have the connective tissue trimmed, at least the more expensie ones.
Now here is the good part. Sometimes Bay Scallops are actually Skate or Ray that have been cut up. Very similar texture and flavor.

The time of year has a lot to do with the flavor of scallops. Also many vendors - even name brands commonly mix sharke or skate that has been cut to look like scallops. Shark is flaky and skate is bitter. This is more noticable with sea scallops than bay scallops.

Bay scallops are smaller and sea scallops are the larger ones. I also was told that alot of bay scallops that are sold on the market or served in certain restaurants, are shark or skate meat, not really scallops, so beware - if they are all about uniform in size, they most likely are punched out of shark or skate meat.

bay scallops are small- and are usually used for pasta dishes . sea scallops are huge and have a sweet and more intense taste and are usually used as appetizers, and can make a meal out of them alone since they are so huge.

first look at the sea wide open space of sea water..
NOW focus on a bay Yes it still can be a salt water environment BUT fresh water rivers feed into it
different food source..
