HIV was initially found in Rhesus monkeys and transmitted by a bite to a human where it mutated into the HIV we have today. It is exchanged through a mixture of body fluids, not just unsafe sex. However, the amount of HIV in saliva or mucus is not viable enough to last during the exchange unless there is an open wound.
There is a lot of information about this on the web. Do some research and you'll get more complete information.

I know that cats do get HIV. I don't know how they get it, probably the same way. It's called Feline HIV and it's comparable to human HIV and is fatal to the cat. It's been around for quite awhile.
A friend had a cat who died of this at least 12 years ago. It was the first I had heard of it. She said that is was comparable to human AIDS.

Animals can get immunodeficiency viruses as well, they just aren't called HIV. I know for sure that there is a virus called Feline Immunodeficiency Virus which is basically the same thing as HIV, but in cats. Not sure about other animals.

I hadn't heard of HIV in animals, but i once heard that gorillas have something in their hairs naturally that protect them from most diseases. But it is known that they can be infected with the Ebola virus and whatever troops that gets it will be wiped out very quickly. so long as the troop doesn't come into contact with a larger population, the virus will be contained in whatever location they died.

Cats, dogs and Chimp are immune to HIV and about 30% of them carry the disease. It is because they were exposed to the epidemic a long time ago.

Yes, animals get infected. AIDS is a disease of baboons. Syphillis is a disease of sheep. Chlamydia is a disease of koalas. Animals spread such amongst themselves and passed the diseases to humans who had sex with the animals.
