I have some cookbooks for Diabetes but sometimes don't agree on what a diabetic can eat. Any ideas or personal experience

Jeanie, you hit the nail on the head. That is the way I have always felt about what I can eat. I am going to have to quit coffee as I cannot learn to drink it without sugar and substitute sweetners don't work. I don't like the taste.

Hi Dino

Try looking for cookbooks for Low Cholesterol foods because it's practically the same diet for diabetics. I had no ideas about foods either until my doctor told me these two diets are much the same. After that, a whole world of food opened up for me. Now I can pretty much nail it to the right foods for me almost immediately even if I'm dining out! You'll do the same before long!

These foods are not just good for cholesterol but typically low glycaemic which will help to level out your sugars. This is important because diabetics are at greater risk of high cholesterol and thus, clogged arteries and stroke due to their metabolism.

Honestly, the rule of thumb is simple - avoid sweets and sugars (although the odd one on occasion is nice) and everything else, take in moderation. It isn't so much about certain foods as it is about quantity. If you have a semi sugary thing every day, you'll end up with higher glucose levels than you would if you had one high sugar thing once a month.

I wish you the very best of luck.

Cheers ~ Peps

When I found out I was diabetic my doctor sent me to a dietician. She told me 65 gms of carbs at each meal, and 2 15 gram carb snacks. I was also suppose to be on a 1600 calorie diet. If I followed what the dietician told me, everything was fine. I was worried because I wasn't losing weight. So for the last year I have eaten what I want in moderation. I don't have all the carbs they told me. I am not losing weight very fast but I no longer have to take medication.

As with any disease you should seek advice from your physician. My case is obviously different from anyone else that has this disease. Each persons body is different, reacts different to medicine, food and exercise.

I hope that these answers help, but please seek the advice of a doctor and dietician. They will know you and your habits better than anyone else.

I had gestational diabetes and my favorite meal was 1 cup of whole wheat pasta with a little tomato sauce.(nothing fancy, hunts or Ragu Organic) I would buy the already cooked chicken sausage from Trader Joe's and heat it up. Then I would mix the sausage with the pasta. On the side I would have a salad. I ate this throughout two pregs and this meal always kept my sugar down to appropriate level. It was filling and nutritiuos. Good luck.

I am diabetic and I eat pretty much what I want in moderation. Obviously chocolate cake with chocolate sauce with sugar sprinkled on top is not a good idea but a little of what I fancy does me good.

If I have something sweet I balance it out with something savoury and MOST of the time this works fine. I do have to avoid alcohol like the plague though as this makes it hard to get my blood levels right.

Try "Fix It and Forget It" Cookbook for Diabetics. It's WONDERFUL! All kinds of things you can make with your crock pot-- and not just beans or pot roast. You can do turkey, chili, desserts, beverages, appetizers-- all kinds of stuff. I've been using mine A LOT since I got it. It's also recommended by the American Diabetic and Dietetic Associations and the American Heart Association. You can also go on the American Diabetic Association's website for recipes, books, cook books, meal plans, etc.

I want to thank the people who gave valid and caring answers to this question- because my husband has been a diabetic for about 6 months and we are still trying to figure it all out. However, I want to warn people like Jeannie- IT IS NOT FUNNY- diabetes is a very serious disease and to answer the way that you do , it shows you really don't care.

I have read that a diabetic needs to balance carbohydrates. And also eat 6 times daily. Hope this helps.

I am a diabetic and I like raw veg's with fat free ranch to snack on instead of chips. I also like fresh fruit like apples and bananas. Diabetics can have natural sugars. I also like salads and broiled chicken.

Use the recording from Independent Achievement for removing the sugar addiction, it will definitely change your mind in a subconscious way ... only 15 minutes a day, when you go to bed. Then you will naturally crave more spicy, significantly less sweet food.
