This happend to my father, when that happend I walked him back to his bedroom. I checked his blood sugar and it was at 316, I checked it a second time, it was 300. I assumed the reading accurate, so I gave him 7units of insulin. Is it normal to have the syptoms I described for having his blood sugar so high? Please let me know, thank you so much.

you can get those symptoms by having your sugar levels too high or too low. I hope you do record the readings in a diary. Show this to the doctor next time he visits and ask for his advice. We measure the glucose in the blood stream with a different set of values in Australia so I just can't help you with the reading. I have no idea of what the ideal values with blood glucose are where you live. But the principle is the same. Too high or too low can bring on those symptoms. Be sure your Dad monitors his sugars, watches his diet, exercises and uses the medications if any that the doctor has given him.

Best wishes & Happy New Year

I do not know the normal in American measuring, but the trembling and dizziness could be a hypo - low blood sugar, or there might be the possibility that he is fighting an infection which can raise the blood sugar levels. Either way, he should be checked out by a doctor as a matter of urgency if his sugars do not go down. Symptoms are similar to ones I had when I went through the roof - in UK 5.00 - 8..00 is considered normal, I had a chest infection and went to 37! Off the scale for my measuring unit! I felt like that.

is he Diabetic 1 or 2

300 is HIGH - had he taken his insulin at supper - usually check after 2 hours after eating - and if over 200 a D2 takes insulin

you may need to talk to his doctor and get the low down

newly diagnosed diabetics can attend a class - usually 2 days
insurance will pay for it - and you can usually bring a guest

you learn what to eat - the differences D1-D2, and what the meds do

I have to eat something before I go to bed at night - so the liver does not DUMP a load of sugar in - - -
it's the store house - and when the body needs sugar it just 'rings the bell' and the liver doesn't calculate - uh needs 10 - send 10 - it just knoiws there is a need and DUMPS could be 30 - and that could really drive your blood sugar up

may need to ask your dad's doctor for the exact answers to these SUPER questions

have a great 2008

Anything can happen, as far as blood sugars are concerned, during the night. What did he eat before he went to bed or for dinner? If he ate something with alot of fat in it, it could have raised his blood sugar while he was sleeping. The reason for this is because after you eat something with fat in it, it takes a few hours for the fat in the food to be absorbed into the blood stream and if there was alot of it, it could have raised it really high before the insulin had a chance to catch up. Thus causing a high blood sugar during the night. Hope this helps. take care
