Hello if you don't devein it you're eating poop!

I notice @ some Chinese restaurants (in TX where I live) the kung pao shrimp is NOT deveined but their jumbo garlic shrimp is. WTF? Anyone know why?

I buy my shrimp peeled AND deveined & sometimes precooked!

I'm with you! I just don't eat shrimp at Oriental Restaurants at all, most don't devein them..I think it is a cultural thing!

I have never encountered the problem anywhere else I have eaten shrimp and thats alot of times and places.

The "vein" has nothing to do with poop. It's the spinal cord of the shrimp, not the intestines. Notice it runs down the top portion of the shrimp-not the underside where the legs are/were? Shrimp are deveined strictly for esthetic reasons, not hygenic. In cases where the shrimp are big, they are usually deveined because it just looks kind of nasty and will have a slight grit in the mouth. But it's nerve tissue, not feces.

"deveining" just makes the shrimp LOOK prettier, there's nothing in shrimp-poop that'll hurt you, unless that's ALL you eat!

If the idea of eating a little shrimp poop bothers you, then you'd best stop eating food altogether! And you DEFINITELY shouldn't read this!:

Deveining the smaller shrimps is tedious and time-consuming; besides they're cooked before serving so that's alright. Over in the Far East we suck and slurp the heads of large prawns when cooked Chinese style... delicious!! What vein?

some shrimp are too small to be worth the time or effort deveining.

I think they are just used to it that way. I usually don't order shrimp from Chinese places as they often still have the eyes on too.
