I need to know how many cans of spray paint I will need to blaze some trail. The blazes will need to last as long as they can.

The spray-paint on tree thing sounds pretty environmentally unfriendly to me, not to mention generally unattractive. Why do you need to blaze a trail? Rock cairns make a less intrusive trail marker. If you have to 'blaze' a trail that will last a little while without making an ugly spray-paint 'blaze', get some ribbon or plastic tape and tie a little to a branch here and there. That would mark a trail well and could be removed later on.

We used a brush, stencil, and oil based paint in a can when we blazed the trails in a local state park a few years ago for a Scout project. We spaced the blazes far enough apart that you could see two blazes ahead, except in certain spots where there were turns or obstacles. We blazed close to 10 miles of trail with just over two quarts of paint. That was about 12 years ago...the blazes are still there. Only a few have cracked or faded. The ranger figures he'll ask us to re-paint in about 5 years. We go through every year and replace blazes on trees that fell over, but don't have to do too much touch up.

The blazes measured 2" x 6"

Well,
As an avid hiker and camper I have to agree with david. You should not even consider spoiling pristine areas with any type of spray paint.

If your not experienced enough to find your way-then buy an inexpensive gps system.
Learn how to use it. Will find they will bring you “home” easily

Please do not mark trees or anything with spray paint. I would suggest not going out if you can't find your way on a couple of dirt roads. Go back to the city.

What you are asking, is not about trail blazing, it is about spray painting trees , rocks & such. in other words, ruining the natural beauty of the outdoors.

I would suggest , that you go some place where there are paved walkways through a wooded area & hope you don't get lost.

if you ever go into the forrest or woods, leave the area , at least as clean or cleaner than you found it.

too many people these days just like to trash ( spray painting included ) nature
