Simple manners are no longer "in fashion"....people are obsessed with their own needs, and do not care about things like "manners". It is sad, but you see it today, and whats more disheartening is you see parents "not showing" their children how to behave properly...so lack of manners is being spread to the next generations!

This is an issue that drives me bonkers (read my previous answers to find out all the other things, lol). When I'm in a restaurant and people allow their children to climb on the table, yell, cry, etc. On top of that there is often no sense that anyone is paying attention to how the child conducts themselves in regards to simple etiquette. Even the youngest should be taught how to thank the waiter for pouring their water, or for taking their order. If they're eating with their mouths full, a simple reminder, will instill in them the importance of closed mouth eating.

One of the most maddening pet peeves is the people who allow their kids to play with the condiments, like salt/pepper shakers, creamer/jam/sugar packs, etc. The last thing I want is some boogery little fingers attacking condiments I use. When my kids were young, and reached for the condiments to play with, I would remind them that it's food and another person may want to use it and it's gross to think some sweaty little grubby paw was manhandling your Sweet and Low before you got to the table. Funny thing is all my reprimands paid off, and the kids will not pick up a salt shaker without using their napkin to lift it from the table.

People lack table manners in general these days. I think it's because families don't sit together and eat enough around the table. Therefore manners aren't reinforced from the early years.

In order to have manners, it is necessary to be taught from childhood. A neglectful parent will not bother to teach manners.

When in a restaurant several years ago, my youngest child asked loudly why the girl at the next table was chewing her food with her mouth open. I quickly corrected her, telling her that loud talking, especially about another person, would not be tolerated in my family, but then pulled the child aside and talked to her quietly about the girl chewing with her mouth open ..we both agreed that it is a DISGUSTING sight to see a beautiful teenager chewing her cud like a cow.

I despair. Kids are not taught, probably because there is so little discipline these days and kids learn by example! I was taught table manners and I am appalled by what younger adults, and children are allowed to get away with these days. It is called apathy!

I remember my real father telling me a story about a little friend of his who came back for tea from school. This kid had a habit of eating with his mouth open. Rather than embarrass the kid, my Grandmother, my father's mother kept saying to her son "John, eat with your mouth closed ...". My father could not understand why he was being told off, but my Grandmother later told him. Oddly after a few times, the boy's table manners improved and he began to eat quietly and tidily - and continues to do so to this day.

because they have no respect even for themselves! When I watch some people eat, it almost turns me off food. I have a relative who can be described only as a barbaric Philistine. watching him eat is like watching two pigs fighting over one trough laden with food. people these days simply don't have the correct parental upbringing and what we see is more often a reflection of the parents poor attempt to bring their children up properly. Oddly enough, table manners do tell us a lot about the background of a person.

well when the woman started working in the 40's to help in world war 2. Then when they left the home to go to work. When men starting leaving the home. The children had no one to tell them to SHUT THERE MOUTHS WHEN THEY CHEW. They lacked parental guidance as a child.

Who eats at a table anymore.

Because a lot of people eat infront of the TV now, rather than with their family. Since the parents aren't sitting across from the kid they don't have to look at their mashed up food in their mouth, so they don't correct the behaviour.

i assume you mean, " why do people eat with THEIR mouth's open"

My guess is that they eat not to enjoy, but eat for the sake of eating, just for the sake of finishing the meal and getting their energy from eating.

Another reason can be that the food it too large for their mouth to chew if with their mouths close, or they are talking ( rude)
