What do you mean?
You need to give more information.
Do you just want to know what awards he was authorized so you can make an award display?
If so, if he is still alive you can ask him what he recieved, then buy those awards online.
If he is deceased you would need to find his DD-214 from when he got out, it will list all of his awards. Or you can call the Human Recources Command for the branch that he served in. That will take a while to get his records back.

Claiming War Medals

what do you mean by claiming?? but if you want to know what the medals are you first need to obtain his DD-214, which is a record of his military service. all branches get this when they discharged even if they reenlist. i have four of them. then you contact the department of veterans affairs. if you want the actual medals that he received they will need a copy of his 214 for reference and proof that your father actually was awarded them. another thing, everytime i receive a medal for doing something, i always get orders from the department of defense/dept. of the army claiming that i am entitled to wear and own the medal awarded. look for those as well. sometimes the award doesn't get put on the 214 and i use the orders to verify that i am entitled.

The only medal you could "use" would be the Medal of Honor. It would give you a spot in any of the 3 military academies (Air Force, Naval, West Point) if you were academically qualified.

You would have no authority or right to wear any of his medals or ribbons on a uniform.

If you are in the UK you need to contact the Records Office at KEW.

You will need a lot of info but they will tell you what you need.

Search for the records office via ask.co.uk or google.co.uk

Try here as your start point
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm

ADDED: Found out some more for you - you need to contact these people.

ARMY MEDAL OFFICE
Government Office Buildings
Worcester Road
Droitwich
Worcestershire
WR9 8AW

01905 772323 (ext 8731) You need to ring this first.

You will need your dad's FULL name & army number for them to cross reference. They will then help you.

Hope that helps - these are the people I needed to contact to sort out obtaining medals

whilst you're interior the united kingdom and the medals have been left incredibly to you in a will, your cousin can huff and puff all he likes however the medals are yours. No courtroom will overturn a will for some thing properly worth so little and the only grounds that would enable the prefer to be overturned is in the journey that your large uncle grow to be no longer of sound ideas whilst he made the prefer. even although, i think of very plenty that he grow to be of sound ideas. it rather is hassle-unfastened for people to bypass away particularly small products from their chattels to acquaintances and kinfolk. He in all probability knew you have been involved interior the medals and left them to you with love.

Mrsjvb is COMPLETELY wrong. You are entitled to wear them, but will have to be on your RIGHT breast pocket.

Contact either the Veteran's Agency, or Records (MCM Division) at:
APC Glasgow
Kentigern House
65 Brown Street
GLASGOW
G2 8EX.

p.s. jamand - The Army Medal Office has moved from Droitwich. They are now at Building 250, RAF Innesworth, Innesworth, GLOUCESTER.

Good luck.

Start with the Veteran's Administration and tell them what you want. I'm sure you will have to provide proof of identity and other paper work but this is a project well worth a little extra effort and footwork. If they are the wrong path they will set you on the right one. Our government is slow but don't give up. You'll be glad you didn't. Good luck to you.

you don't. If you want to purchase copies of them to mount in a shadow box or something, you contact the Records department and ask for his record. It will take around three months.

But you can NOT wear them yourself.
